I have stayed in quite a few Bed and Breakfasts on travels. I like the intimacy and unique experience of this type of lodging.
I saw the decent/good reviews of Buonarroti Home in Rome, and was looking forward to a great, authentic experience in an intimate B&B setting.
When the taxi dropped us off at the address, the only marking on the building was a small plaque by the large, wooden door that marked "Buonarroti Home". We rang, and the admin. released he door with a remote buzzer (a-la New York).
We went in through a dim stair foyer and pulled our luggage up half a flight of stairs to the retrofit elevator. The admin made it down to help us, and we found ourselves in a narrow hall, in front of a cubbyhole desk. The carpets were clearly aged and needing attention.
Although we had asked for a king bed, we were placed on two twins pulled together (not the most romantic arrangement) in a room immediately next to the cubbyhole reception. This, it turns out, was a serious issue. Whenever anyone came or went (at all hours of the night and pre-dawn), we got a reverberated Bona Sera or Grazie. One afternoon, while napping after a particularly athletic march through Rome, we were surprised by a rousing and prolonged row (fight, shouting match) between what appeared to be the owners (were they really the owners??). The argument lasted an hour and a half. 'Through this wole thing, they actually checked in two guests. Pretty impressive, although unprofessional.
Breakfast at a bed and breakfast is what I look forward to. Call me fixated on food, but I actually go to bed thingking about the wonderful things that will be served up to me in the morning. This breakfast included a Croissant (in Rome?) in a foil pouch, a sealed plastic cup of yogurt, and other grocery store stuff. You are served Cafe on request. Oh yes - you MUST reserve your breakfast time the night before, or you will get the evil eye if you just show up for breakfast when you wake up.
Rooms were old, musty, ill kept. Rooms are noisy and VERY small. Don't expect a service mentality. The location is edgy (near the train terminal), but I never felt in near and present danger (although I didn't feel totally comfortable walking in the area late at night).
Bottom line: It's not too expensive, it's central, and it's a reasonale place to sleep. It's loud when other guests arrive at night, the staff is borderline unprofessional and rooms are dingy and tiny.
If you want a nice hotel for your trip to Rome, don't stay here. You can do much better for alittle more money (I paid 120euro on Priceline Europe)
