We (2 adults, 2 teens) stayed at the hotel for 3 nights in a quadruple room. We elected not to get air conditioning for an extra 10 Euro. It was hot but comfortable, however our room looked into the courtyard and things got a little noisy one night due to a party in an adjoining apartment. Not the hotel's fault, but we should have taken the air conditioning and closed the window. Breakfast was very basic, but there are so many places to get food all day long immediately around the hotel and in the train station that it doesn't matter. The room was basic, not new but very clean. The staff was very helpful and the restaurant recommendation (Regina's a few blocks away) was great. This was the cheapest hotel by about 40% in all of Italy (we also stayed in Florence and Venice). The other hotels were a little better (newer rooms and better breakfast), but much more expensive and we didn't come to Italy to spend all of our time in the hotel. I wouldn't hesitate to save a few bucks and stay here again. We didn't find the neighborhood bad at all even though our guidebook said the train station neighborhood was sketchy.

What you see in the pictures is NOT what you get. This was the worst hotel during our trip to Italy (we stayed at 4 different properties within the same price range). The place is dirty, run-down and incredibly noisy. The furniture is falling apart. The bathroom was 100% disgusting - you think twice before getting inside the shower because it is THAT bad. The hotel did seem to have a few remodelled rooms, but they didn't look much better than the rest of the rooms (we checked them out when the rooms were being "cleaned"). Breakfast included 1 stale roll and coffee or juice from a machine. That's it - no fruit, pastries or cold-cuts of any kind. Staff were incredibly rude. If you try to complain, they ARGUE with you and they restart the argument every time you happen to pass by. Something like this would be completely out of the question in any North American/German/Swiss, etc. hotel regardless of the price. Even though the place is adverized as air-conditioned, they charge you extra for the AC (if you agree to pay, you get a remote to your room's AC and there's no way to control the AC without the remote). This place is to be avoided at all costs - a stay at Luciani can spoil your whole vacation!

Management response from hotel_luciani, Public Relations Manager
(Management representative)

The pictures as seen from our website are the rooms you will get if you reserve the right room. Meaning, if you reserve a classic room, naturally you can’t have a superior room. If you make a simulation of reserving a room from our web site, you will be given a series of choices, and naturally you will be given the cheapest room as the first option, and at the last option the superior rooms which costs more. As stated in most reviews, the rooms were simple but clean. As a matter of fact, out of 27 reviews, there are 24 votes for 3/5 and above, and only 3 out of 27 reviews voted for less than 3/5. Meaning, we’ve maintained the satisfaction of clients as far as cleanliness is concerned. From our special promotion rates, it is stated that you can save up to 20% discount for the cost of the room, but it is clearly stated that the air condition is not included. It is the client's obligation to read and understand the terms and conditions before confirming the reservation. The management and staff has never been rude to our guests, as a matter of fact, from all the reviews posted, most people say the staff are reliable, friendly and honest. Any dissatisfaction from our guests should have been discussed with us during their stay so we can give immediate remedy and solutions such as transfering to another room or further discount for the room rate. Our deepest gratitude for the other guests who wrote good reviews about the hotel.

Stayed 4 nights, Thursday to Monday. The people at the desk, especially Veronica were fantastic to say the least. Hotel is very conveniently situated right next to the train and bus station. The area was no problem at all. The superior room included air conditioning which was necessary at this time of year (otherwise 10 euro a day!). Breakfast was very simple but a reasonable start to the day. Staff reliable, friendly and honest. The rooms were simple but comfortable for the price paid. It is NOT a rundown place with a few beds and chairs. I had the feeling that they wanted to please so that word of mouth would spread the news of a good place at a very reasonable price with a decent service, which is not the rip off that much of Rome is. Be sure to book ahead for some of the major sites like the Vatican Museum, Borghese Gallery and the Coloseum if you can.
In Trastevere there are good meals to be had at reasonable prices. Go to the Piazza Sante Maria in Trastevere and walk upwards through the small alley about 50m to the right of the church. Dont eat or drink (a beer can be 8 euros!) in the square. Carry on for about 600m round a slight bend and then a turn to the left to Taverna della Scala (Piazza della Scala). A litre house wine 8 euros, a menu for 15 euros (4 courses with choices for the two main courses-good Italian cuisine and quality) and an excellent staff.
Veronica at the hotel has excellent ideas for walks, visits and ideas of how to do things. There is internet access in the Hotel.
Will definitely stay there again and recommend it with 5 stars as an overall fair priced and good package.

I was a little wary reading some of the other reviews for this hotel but when we got there we had a great experience. The staff was incredibly helpful. We arrived early and our room was not quite ready so we were offered a different one and it was just fine, we were ready to take a little nap after a long flight. We did pay for the air conditioning which was worth it! With the ceiling fan running at night and the shutters closed, we heard zero street noise. I read a review about stale rolls and they were not stale at all, they were warm out of the oven. This is just the kind of bread they serve in Europe, it’s like a baguette – it’s hard on the outside! The room itself was great for the price – the shower stall leaked on the floor a bit but it didn’t flood the bathroom or anything. I liked the tile floors and the room was very clean. We had to leave early in the morning to catch our flight back and they let us eat breakfast a little early which was nice. I had nothing but a good experience here, we felt safe and I would absolutely stay here the next time I am in Rome.

  • Liked — The location couldn't have been easier to find and so close to tour buses! You can get anywhere from here.
  • Disliked — Lots of loud teenagers.

We stayed at Hotel Luciani for almost a week in April 2008. It was a nice experience. Hotel Luciani staff is very personable and hospitable, and make their guests feel welcome. They serve a nice breakfast every morning. They have internet facilities in the lobby for guest's use. They are very helpful with advice, directions, and orientation in Rome. The location of the hotel is excellent in the city. They are only 1 1/2 block from Termini station, which gives you access to the Metro (and all of the tourist attractions), as well as the commuter and Eurostar trains to other Italian cities. Their are also several tourist buses that stop at Termini, so this is a plus. In addition, ther are many restaurants and convenience stores within a 3 block radius. Laundry facilities are just 3 blocks away, and the staff directed us to the laundry facility. There are many excellent restaurants right nearby. You can also go into Termini station, which contains many eating facilities, ATM, shopping, and a bookstore. I was able to make my connections to and from the airport, and to a day trip to Naples from Termini, which makes the Hotel Luciani an excellent location. In addition, my luggage was misplaced at the airport. The Hotel Luciani staff recovered my luggage when it was returned from the airline, and had it waiting for me in the lobby.

I recommend them highly for convenience, location, cleanliness, safety, and friendly staff.
