I stayed in hotel Ascot last august (2006). At first glance, the hotel and the room looked nice but I started having some problems after that. First, i asked for a room with ac, but when I arrived the guy at the front desk didn't give me the remote control for it. I had to go and asked specially for it, and then the old guy told me that it wasn't necessary because that day wasn't too hot. It was at least 80 degrees and I had been walking with my luggage from the train station so I replied I wanted it anyway. The point is that I never actually understood how the thing work so some days it was fine but other it was too cold. One of the days, the hot water was out and it took a day to get it back. The room was clean the first day but they didn't really clean for the rest of my stay (which was 6 nights). And the old guy never was kind, though the rest of the people at the front desk were really nice. If I have to choose again, I'll stay at least a block closer to the Termini (the last block that you need to walk to get to the hotel is not really nice).

Stayed for one night on the 4th August. Were only in Rome for one night as headed off to Tuscany following day and only planned to be in the hotel for the 7 hours during which we would be sleeping. Hence we went for the mid-lower end of the market.
Paid €80 through venere after using the 4% discount code which you'll find in the forums here.
Hotel occupies one floor of an apartment building, the rest of which are full of flats. Receptionist was friendly. Room was of average size. Quite modern looking but basic. Ensuite bathroom looked slightly dated and had only a shower no bath which if we had been staying for more than one night would have annoyed my wife.
We ate near the hotel that night down a side street. Choice of restaurants in immediate vacinity is limited, but other side of Termini is better. Food where we ate was great and cheap but waiter was the grumpiest man on earth.
Breakfast in the hotel was basic but good. Crossiants, rolls, cheese. Good coffee served to the table.
From the main entrance of the Termini station, the hotel is a simple 5 minute walk and is easy to find.
Overall for what we paid, in a major city, I would say Ascot is as good as it would get. We stayed in Rome again a week later and this time paid €50 more to stay in the Altantico (See full review), without being snobby I think we would always pay the extra now to stay there instead even though I can say nothing negative about the Ascot.

Very conveniently located by Termini Station, ideal for exploring Rome on foot and by public transport. Rooms are small, but clean and with very efficient air conditioning - a godsend in baking hot July weather. A cheerful little breakfast room with a pleasant continental breakfast and great coffee. Friendly staff.
A character point to note about this hotel. It's sited on the second floor in a traditional Roman apartment block. I loved the atmospheric gloom of the echoing entrance hall and the lift is straight out of a B movie thriller. And I've always wanted to breakfast by a balcony overlooking a traditional Roman street market. A cheerful and fascinating way to start the day. Definitely stay there again.

This hotel is in a good locaiton and close walking distance to major sites. However, the room was small and the price too much for what was offered. Also, there were problems with the phone in the room - we couldn't get it to work properly, even after contacting reception - and they recommended a very bad touristy restaurant to us even after we especially asked for a non-touristy one. The price was too high for what we got - but maybe that's just Rome.

My Wife and I recently stayed in the Hotel Ascot, near Termini. Although the hotel was very basic it was very clean and the staff were friendly and courteous at all times. The shower was excelent, although the towels were a bit wierd (a bit like drying yourself with a table cloth, I would imagine). The only draw back was the noise insulation from within the hotel i.e. the lobby and other rooms was a bit poor. However, the windows provided excelent insulation from the noise of the busy street directly outside. Our room even had a small balcony was provided an ideal spot to people watch from.. All in all, a very good hotel at a very good price (for Rome). I would not have any hesitation to stay there again and would recomend it. Oh, they also looked after our bags before and after we checked in.
