Upon arrival (eve of UEFA Champions Cup!) we were informed they were overbooked and that we would be taxi-ed at their expense to their partner hotel not far away. We accepted this and it generally went without major drama (including taxi-ing our bags back next day), but we were glad to return to the one we had booked for the other 3 nights of our stay, as it was situated far more conveniently to the locations we were to visit.

The room and amenities were fine and overlooked several eateries. Our main problem while there was that they did not fix the fridge. It was lightly stocked but not turned on (not even plugged in!). When my husband plugged it in, all the power to everything else went! We reported it next morning (we reversed the power glitch), and hoped to find the fridge working in the evening, so we could keep a couple of cool drinks on hand as there are no tea/coffee making facilities in room there, but it still didn't work. We just opted to work around this minor inconvenience, and bought cool drinks from the dispensing machine down the road. We had to ask for drinking vessels of any kind for the room as well, not even a glass or cup to have a drink of water from until 2nd day when we requested it. I assumed it was just an oversight the first day, but not so. They readily provided us with paper cups downstairs that did the job.

The breakfast is, as I have seen reported before, extremely basic, but that is enough for us. Just cereal and some breads/croissants, orange juice and a coffee making machine.

We were within comfortable walking distance of the Colosseum + Forum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Corso etc, and between the two metro stations of Cavour and Colosseo. The day we left our area was cordoned off for the support buses and vehicles of the Giro (Tour of Italy cycle race), but that didn't bother us or hinder our plans, just added to the flavour of the experience.

I would definitely recommend Hotel Solis as generally very clean and obliging in service (if not entirely thorough), and excellent location-wise.

What a fabulous location! Outside the doors of this hotel was the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, the metro and lots of great restaurants (although you have to search for them). Everything in Rome seemed to be within walking distance but if it was a bit farther (Vatican City) then the metro was just around the corner (5 minute walk) and relatively cheap (1 euro a trip or 4 euros a day).

The hotel is basic but clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were fairly spacious. Breakfast was croissants (delicious chocolate filled ones), cereal, hard boiled eggs and tea, coffee and juice. It was basic but the croissants were fresh and delicious.

Our one issue was that when we arrived they didn't have our room available so they shipped us to one of their other hotels. It didn't have the best location but it was close to the metro and a bit more quieter because it wasn't in the center of town.We had them move us to the Solis the next day and everything worked out fine. They even had our luggage shipped over while we were touring the town.

My boyfriend and I made a reservation through Hotels.com for Hotel Solis weeks before our trip. We specifically picked this hotel due to its location (despite some not so great reviews). However, we got there, and they did not have a room for us. It was not Hotels.com's fault, because Hotel Solis knew we had a reservation. But they literally denied giving us a room and tried to give us another room in another hotel across the city (in a worse area). I was livid!

The receptionist tried to help, but she really didn't have any authority. She called the manager (after my pleading), and he was apparently out riding his motorcycle and couldn't be bothered to talk to me. Needless to say, the customer service was TERRIBLE! The manager apparently doesn't care about his customers enough to ensure they have a room - after we clearly made a reservation. I would never stay here again, and I would definitely not recommend it to anyone who wants a stress free vacation. They also manage the Hotel Best and Hotel Invictus, so I would stay away from those as well.

I chose the Solis above all for its location. The Colosseum is just round the corner, the Forum is across the road, the Victor Emmanuel monument and the Campidoglio just minutes away and the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi Fountain - indeed everything else - all in walking distance. We were a party of 11 and our rooms were fine. Comfortable beds, spacious bathrooms, helpful staff and a good, Italian breakfast. We all hope to stay at the Solis again and having read some of the other reviews of the hotel can only say to travellers that if you want four or five star luxury then you have to book - and pay for - four and five star hotels. But if you want a comfortable and convenient base from which to explore Rome, the Hotel Solis is unsurpassable.

You cannot get a more perfect location, close to everything, within walking distance of anything in Rome. Hundreds of restaurants, bars, gelato, fast food, gift shops all on the same block and nearby area. The front desk was very helpful, very nice and spoke good English. From the view of the street you can see the forum. The shower was a bit small, the room was huge in standards of European rooms.
