I read the other reviews on this site just after getting back from the travel agent having booked a twin room in this hotel. I was horrified but was unable to change my very short notice booking without incurring major charges.

When we arrived at the hotel, the gentleman on reception was very welcoming and polite (as were all the staff we dealt with during our stay). Our room was an extremely pleasant surprise after the reviews we'd read - it was very clean, the bathroom was small but immaculate, and it was exactly what we had paid for. The room was cleaned every day, and we had none of the complaints that other guests had.

The location of the hotel is excellent for the price and we were able to choose whether to use public transport or simply walk to pretty much all of the sites.

All in all, we got what we paid for. If we want more next time, we'll pay more, but we would be more than happy to go back and stay there again.

Just after paying, we found that our room was not acceptable. The main concerns that we had were: the shower had an abundance of black mold, and the shower door was not even attached, but completely broken, and we deemed it unuseable. There was no safe and there was dust that set off allergies straightaway.

We brought this to the attention of the hotel staff (Michel) who said as we checked in so late there was nothing he could do as there were no other rooms available. He was rude and unhelpful. There was nothing he could do until morning and we could move rooms.

Due to the state of the room and his unhelpful attitude we told him we would be checking out first thing in the morning. He claimed that was fine and we would not be charged for the second night. Any refunds for the first night would have to be taken up with the manager in the morning. (The night porter, Antonio, was present when this converstation took place.)

During the night we were bitten (by look of the bites by bed bugs) and the room was very noisy and we could hear the elevator "dinging" long into the night. Again, we deemed this unacceptable.

In the morning, the manager (Director Colantunono Vito) told us he could not give us a refund for EITHER night, though we had only stayed one. He said that we must contact the agency we booked through, UniTravel, and would only be refunded if they agreed.
We contacted UniTravel and they agreed to the refund.

The manager then stated he could not give us a refund and was incredibly rude and unhelpful, and when we showed him pictures of the shower we had taken, he just shrugged his shoulders and said that is normal for Rome. We know this is not the case because we paid less money for clean accommodations in the same area. The conversation concluded with the manager claiming he could not give us a refund, as he did not have the power. He said only the administrator could give us the refund and to come back the following morning, he would let them know the problem and we could speak to them to obtain our refund for the second night that we did not stay there, and look at getting a full (or partial) refund, for the night we did stay.

The following morning we went back to the hotel, only for the manager to be rude and unhelpful and deny us any refund at all. His promise that we could talk to the administrator also turned out to be a lie, one the manager freely admitted to. He said we could not speak with anyone but him, and could not get any refund at all. He also threatened to call the police, even though the situation clearly had not escalated.

The time we had to waste, let alone the unsavory experience the one night we were forced to stay, has left us not only upset, but out the 95.00 EUR for the night we did not stay, despite telling them immediately we would be checking out the next morning, due to the uninhabitable nature of the room and the terrible attitude of the staff.

This hotel was awful, the pictures on the website are nothing like what we got!! We did expect it to be basic with it being a 2 star, but this was a joke. The bathroom was horrible, I don't know how old the shower curtain was, it was disgusting, we also had some unwelcome guests in the bathroom (ants) Filthy hotel. We're just so glad Rome was amazing and made up for it. The only good thing about it was the location which was great, but, there are far better hotels in he same vicininty. We're hoping to go back later in the year and one thing for sure we won't be staying here.

Well this Hotel was such a disappointment!
Do not be fooled by the nice hotel pictures, because it is nothing like that. The Room was filthy and dusty and the Bathroom was just Vomit!
We went during the HOT Summer, and needed to Shower like every hour or so, but I had to really restrain myself from showering because the Shower was just disgusting!
Out of the 6 Days, we stayed there, the Room was only cleaned once! Plus no air con, and this a major if you are travelling peak summer time! The Single Beds are TINY and close together!
The Hotel lift is shared by the Hotel next door and is really tiny, so when we had to take our luggage up, we had to take 2/3 trips up and down the lift to get all our stuff to our Rooms.
The Breakfast was nothing special, but okay I guess, considering the price you're paying!
Although the Location was good, I'm not too sure about the Local people, because my brother nearly got mugged. He went just outside the Hotel and some guy came up to him and asked him if he was alone, although he was, he just pointed to some guy and said, No, my friends just there, then the Man just left and watched him from a distant; he came up to my brother again asking where his friend was and for the time, and my brother just legged it inside the Hotel.
I only booked this Hotel, because the Pictures looked decent and the price was good!
I had a fantastic time in Rome but at the end of each day, my mood went down when I came to this Hotel.
But I must say, the Reception Staff were very nice and helpful and it is cheap, with good location. Other than that, it's a no no!

We have just returned from a short trip to Rome, staying at the Altavilla hotel. Myself and two friends, 3 ladies in 50-60 age range arrived in anticipation of a cultural, educational and enlightening visit. The Altavilla was in a superb position for sightseeing, near to the Termini.
The staff on reception were friendly enough, but the lift was out of order and our room was on the fourth floor. There was a very small service lift available, which could accomodate 2 people at a squeeze, but my friends didn't fancy their chances in it and so we walked up the four flights Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, twice each day. We had to pass through the courtyard on the way to the stairs. Two or three floors above a line of washing was strung across it (see photo). The stairway was dusty and dark and appeared as if it hadn't seen a duster, mop or a fresh coat of paint since Caeser was a boy. The room was adequate, sheets and towels were clean. the shower was tiny with part of the shower cubicle broken (seePhoto). The window and the blind were filthy .We had to put a 5euro deposit on a broken remote control for Tv. We enquired if we could get coffee and were directed to a cafe outside contary to brochure stating 24hour snack-bar.
Breakfast was cornflakes, a choice of a roll,a cake tea or coffee. Adequate, but no fruit juice and the girl preparing it was unfriendly. The chairs in the breakfast room were plastic garden chairs.
The Altavilla is certainly not a for anyone who is not fully fit. It is probably suited for young singles, definitely not for families or for anyone arranging a romantic weekend.
