Just after paying, we found that our room was not acceptable. The main concerns that we had were: the shower had an abundance of black mold, and the shower door was not even attached, but completely broken, and we deemed it unuseable. There was no safe and there was dust that set off allergies straightaway.
We brought this to the attention of the hotel staff (Michel) who said as we checked in so late there was nothing he could do as there were no other rooms available. He was rude and unhelpful. There was nothing he could do until morning and we could move rooms.
Due to the state of the room and his unhelpful attitude we told him we would be checking out first thing in the morning. He claimed that was fine and we would not be charged for the second night. Any refunds for the first night would have to be taken up with the manager in the morning. (The night porter, Antonio, was present when this converstation took place.)
During the night we were bitten (by look of the bites by bed bugs) and the room was very noisy and we could hear the elevator "dinging" long into the night. Again, we deemed this unacceptable.
In the morning, the manager (Director Colantunono Vito) told us he could not give us a refund for EITHER night, though we had only stayed one. He said that we must contact the agency we booked through, UniTravel, and would only be refunded if they agreed.
We contacted UniTravel and they agreed to the refund.
The manager then stated he could not give us a refund and was incredibly rude and unhelpful, and when we showed him pictures of the shower we had taken, he just shrugged his shoulders and said that is normal for Rome. We know this is not the case because we paid less money for clean accommodations in the same area. The conversation concluded with the manager claiming he could not give us a refund, as he did not have the power. He said only the administrator could give us the refund and to come back the following morning, he would let them know the problem and we could speak to them to obtain our refund for the second night that we did not stay there, and look at getting a full (or partial) refund, for the night we did stay.
The following morning we went back to the hotel, only for the manager to be rude and unhelpful and deny us any refund at all. His promise that we could talk to the administrator also turned out to be a lie, one the manager freely admitted to. He said we could not speak with anyone but him, and could not get any refund at all. He also threatened to call the police, even though the situation clearly had not escalated.
The time we had to waste, let alone the unsavory experience the one night we were forced to stay, has left us not only upset, but out the 95.00 EUR for the night we did not stay, despite telling them immediately we would be checking out the next morning, due to the uninhabitable nature of the room and the terrible attitude of the staff.
