We have just returned from a short trip to Rome, staying at the Altavilla hotel. Myself and two friends, 3 ladies in 50-60 age range arrived in anticipation of a cultural, educational and enlightening visit. The Altavilla was in a superb position for sightseeing, near to the Termini.
The staff on reception were friendly enough, but the lift was out of order and our room was on the fourth floor. There was a very small service lift available, which could accomodate 2 people at a squeeze, but my friends didn't fancy their chances in it and so we walked up the four flights Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, twice each day. We had to pass through the courtyard on the way to the stairs. Two or three floors above a line of washing was strung across it (see photo). The stairway was dusty and dark and appeared as if it hadn't seen a duster, mop or a fresh coat of paint since Caeser was a boy. The room was adequate, sheets and towels were clean. the shower was tiny with part of the shower cubicle broken (seePhoto). The window and the blind were filthy .We had to put a 5euro deposit on a broken remote control for Tv. We enquired if we could get coffee and were directed to a cafe outside contary to brochure stating 24hour snack-bar.
Breakfast was cornflakes, a choice of a roll,a cake tea or coffee. Adequate, but no fruit juice and the girl preparing it was unfriendly. The chairs in the breakfast room were plastic garden chairs.
The Altavilla is certainly not a for anyone who is not fully fit. It is probably suited for young singles, definitely not for families or for anyone arranging a romantic weekend.

Alora....if you are looking for a nice place to stay in Rome try under a bridge before you book this dank, dirty, smelly, overpriced, bottom feeder of a "hotel". Couldn't stomach even 2 hours in the room, no exaggeration.
If you have already booked then, honey, get your money back asap. There are a million better hotels in lovely rome than this.

Hotel Altavilla... well the location was fantastic- a short walk down the hill and you are near to everything you could want to see in Rome. Other than that, it was not great.

When I booked the hotel, I was under the impression that it was a 3* hotel and that it had an internet connection.

I booked a twin room for my brother and I, the beds were less than 1 foot apart and the room reeked of cigarette smoke. The bathroom was quite interesting, the door wouldn't lock properly and the shower leaked over the floor. The 3/4 bath was quite amusing!

Breakfast was not a high point, we went for breakfast once. Breakfast was very basic, yet there are lots of places to eat nearby.

Our room looked out onto a courtyard where renovation works were taking place, thankfully we weren't in our room much otherwise the noise could have been quite bad.

I wouldn't stay at Hotel Altavilla again, it's not the worst hotel in Rome- but it was cheap.

I don't understand from the previous reviews if perhaps there are some old rooms that haven't been renovated, but I found none of the problems listed below. It is a city centre 2 star hotel next to Termini so don't expect marble bathrooms or champagne in your room, but you get a good deal for what you pay for here. The accommodation was clean and bright and the rates on offer were excellent. We ended up staying for two nights more that the initial arrival date becuse every other hotel seemed more expensive and all you need a room for in Rome is sleeping and showering. Can't complain at the budget accommodation on offer, and save your money to spend on the myriad of things to do, eat or buy in the city.

Dreadful hotel - nothing like photos on their website. Stayed here for 1 night and it was 1 too many. Room dirty, smelly, noisy. Shower didn't work. Bed was old and uncomfortable. DO NOT stay here. I am not that fussy, honest, but this place is awful.
