We have just returned from a short trip to Rome, staying at the Altavilla hotel. Myself and two friends, 3 ladies in 50-60 age range arrived in anticipation of a cultural, educational and enlightening visit. The Altavilla was in a superb position for sightseeing, near to the Termini.
The staff on reception were friendly enough, but the lift was out of order and our room was on the fourth floor. There was a very small service lift available, which could accomodate 2 people at a squeeze, but my friends didn't fancy their chances in it and so we walked up the four flights Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, twice each day. We had to pass through the courtyard on the way to the stairs. Two or three floors above a line of washing was strung across it (see photo). The stairway was dusty and dark and appeared as if it hadn't seen a duster, mop or a fresh coat of paint since Caeser was a boy. The room was adequate, sheets and towels were clean. the shower was tiny with part of the shower cubicle broken (seePhoto). The window and the blind were filthy .We had to put a 5euro deposit on a broken remote control for Tv. We enquired if we could get coffee and were directed to a cafe outside contary to brochure stating 24hour snack-bar.
Breakfast was cornflakes, a choice of a roll,a cake tea or coffee. Adequate, but no fruit juice and the girl preparing it was unfriendly. The chairs in the breakfast room were plastic garden chairs.
The Altavilla is certainly not a for anyone who is not fully fit. It is probably suited for young singles, definitely not for families or for anyone arranging a romantic weekend.
