As a solo female traveller, I stayed two nights -- one week apart -- and I had no hesitation to go back after that first night. Despite the criticisms here of certain facets of this hotel, I LIKED the 5th floor location (it's safe!), found the cage-lift interesting, and the winding staircase up to my room utterly charming. I look forward to different things like this when I travel abroad. I have stayed in the Termini area of Rome before and despite the seediness I feel safer here than any train station-area hotel in the U.S. It is actually about a 10-minute walk from the station, closer to the Repubblica metro station than Termini.

I did have to request a change of room to a courtyard-side one as the one on the street-side was very noisy, as is any street-facing room in Rome. Both rooms I saw offered me a nice balcony. There are also innumerable restaurants in the immediate area, frequented by local families. The breakfast is only 2 rolls (very fresh and delicious) and coffee or tea, so if you want a large American-style breakfast you'll have to supplement somewhere else.

If your idea of a hotel is Ramada Inn-esque or Hilton, then Domus Mea is NOT for you. We found it delightful! The room was spotlessly clean with a modern bathroom. Yes, you do have take the elevator up to the 5th floor but it works marvelously even if you can only fit 1 person and a couple of suitcases in at a time.

The staff was friendly and obliging. This is also the owner's home and they make you feel very welcome.

They have a nice small terrace where you can set and observe the street market below. Nothing fancy but very quaint and a friendly feel. The coffee is the best I have ever drank in my life and I am a coffeophile. And yes, the rolls are hard BECAUSE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE. They are hollow puff pastry and were delicious as were the individually packaged sweet bread.

They provided us with an excellent map, In addition, the hotel is only a half block away from the main termini so sightseeing is a breeze. Lots of interesting buildings and shops near by and we never felt not safe, not even for a minute.

We were taking a cruise so it is some distance to the port but we were able to find fellow ship passengers to split the cost of shuttles from the hotel to the port by posting on our cruise ship's web page for passengers.

If plain and decent and a real feel for the area and people is enough for you then Domus Mea is a bargain. We are going back in 2010 and we will be staying several days this time. With the current euro to dollar exchange rate, Domus Mea becomes an even better choice.

  • Liked — Very friendly staff and this hotel gave you a real feel for the area.
  • Disliked — Some distance to the port if you are cruising

If a smell of urine coming from the train station near by would not make you dizzy and nauseous this hotel probably will.

This hotel located near the Termini train station that overcrowded with gypsies and homeless who are using trees and bushes as a bathrooms as well as bedrooms. We were uncomfortable walking at night in that area. We were just lucky that we were staying there for only one night.

Check out is 10 am. So around 8 am the owner told us that we need to leave now, because other people are coming in an hour. I told him that we cannot leave now because we need to go outside and look for breakfast. The owner said that we need to pack now or they maid will pack for us!! So we did. We left our suitcases at the hotel and went to look for a place to eat. There were only few coffee shops around it and none of them were open.

The breakfast that they served at the hotel was not the breakfast it was something else. I ordered coffee and I regretted because it seems that coffee that they are serving is at least as old as the building. It tasted like mud water (may be it was?). Sorry, I forgot about second half of the breakfast which is small piece of bread (one piece per person) and brick of butter.

This hotel did not include the price of AC which is 15E at night and it is impossible to sleep without because the smell that was coming from the street (by the way hotel in the fifth floor with the broken elevator) made me nauseous and noise from the drunken bums was not helping either.

If you are over 300 pounds you cannot take the elevator because it brakes. We have to send our suitcases in elevator and walk 5 flights up.
I guess this hotel would be good fro someone who have a lot energy to deal on your two weeks vacation with annoying and aggravated owner.

We spent 5 nights in the hotel. We think that the value for price is correct. The room was clean and we had individual bathroom too. The hotel is on a very quiet place and close to the main station (train, bus, metro). We were on a sightseeing tour and just in the night in the hotel. The staff is very friendly and speak more languages. The breakfast was a little bit boring but it is better as you'll get nothing and it is the same like in other 2 star hotels in Europe. The capuccino was fine and the roll was crispy. :-) The elevator was old and little but it can not be authoritative for choosing a hotel because you use it just some time a day. It is a perfect hotel for sightseeing in Rome. We can recommend it to anybody!

This place is not very exciting. Very old fashioned and a bit of a dark atmosphere. It is clean however, and breakfast is Ok, but again unexciting.

If you are a single male, or a couple used to slumming it a bit (students for example!) then it would be Ok. Definately not for couples, familes or a romantic weekend though.

It is only a few minutes walk from the pick up point for Terravision/shuttle buses to Ciampino though.
