If your idea of a hotel is Ramada Inn-esque or Hilton, then Domus Mea is NOT for you. We found it delightful! The room was spotlessly clean with a modern bathroom. Yes, you do have take the elevator up to the 5th floor but it works marvelously even if you can only fit 1 person and a couple of suitcases in at a time.
The staff was friendly and obliging. This is also the owner's home and they make you feel very welcome.
They have a nice small terrace where you can set and observe the street market below. Nothing fancy but very quaint and a friendly feel. The coffee is the best I have ever drank in my life and I am a coffeophile. And yes, the rolls are hard BECAUSE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE. They are hollow puff pastry and were delicious as were the individually packaged sweet bread.
They provided us with an excellent map, In addition, the hotel is only a half block away from the main termini so sightseeing is a breeze. Lots of interesting buildings and shops near by and we never felt not safe, not even for a minute.
We were taking a cruise so it is some distance to the port but we were able to find fellow ship passengers to split the cost of shuttles from the hotel to the port by posting on our cruise ship's web page for passengers.
If plain and decent and a real feel for the area and people is enough for you then Domus Mea is a bargain. We are going back in 2010 and we will be staying several days this time. With the current euro to dollar exchange rate, Domus Mea becomes an even better choice.
