My husband and I found a great deal on Expedia at this hotel as part of a flight and hotel package, so we booked it for our honeymoon. We stayed for 9 nights and overall, I was very pleased with Blu Hotel.

First off, if you're looking for ambiance, look elsewhere. It's a pretty basic hotel, but still quite nice. The decor was nothing special, but the bathroom was huge (with a tub! So nice when you've been trekking all over the city!), and the room itself was a lot larger than I expected from a European hotel room. Another great feature was the room had a tile floor, not some icky, mildewy carpet that you find in a lot of hotels. We also stayed on the 1st floor (2nd floor to Americans), and had a really fabulous wrap-around porch attached to the room. It was really nice to step outside and watch the city waking up in the morning.

The biggest negative about the room was the bed, as it was not the most comfortable. I managed just fine, but it bothered my husband a bit. There's also a bit of noise coming from the hallways sometimes, but nothing too terrible. The doors to the porch kept the street noise out surprisingly well.

In the room there's a small TV, but only Italian channels and they're very limited. We'd hoped to have at least the BBC, since it was right after the election and I wanted to stay caught up, but mostly we ended up watching bad 80's cartoons in Italian (Anyone remember Sheera?). There's also a mini-fridge loaded with the typical stuff-- Coke, water, beer, etc. All for a ridiculous price, but it's there if you want it.

The hotel breakfast was decent, though nothing terribly special, and overpriced. It's convenient though, since there's little else around that area for food. The restaurant is okay, but again, nothing special.

Blu Hotel is kinda far from the metro, so if you're planning on using it as your main means of transportation, be prepared for a 10-15 minute walk crossing a few busy roads. It wasn't that big of an issue for us, but Rome in general requires a lot of walking unless you do one of those bus tours, so having to hike back to the hotel at night isn't so fun. Rome is VERY pedestrian-friendly, so the walk itself isn't terrible. I was also very happy to be able to burn so many calories-- I ate whatever I wanted because we walked so much! The closest station is Tiburtina, on the B line.

The hotel staff was a mixed experience. They all spoke English very well, which was a relief since my Italian sucks. The male receptionists were very helpful and knowledgeable, giving us directions to places all over the city. My only complaint was that one of the female receptionists was somewhat rude and seemed to be annoyed whenever we asked a question.

Overall, I think Blu is a great place for those on a budget that have plenty of time to see the city. We had a great time.

Pros: Clean (thanks to the most fantastic housekeeping staff!), mostly quiet, inexpensive and overall a pleasant experience.

Cons: not the most comfortable bed, somewhat far from the metro (but still very do-able to most)

General tips: If you're going to be using the metro a lot, buy a pass from one of the tobacco shops in the station. We used a machine once, and it ate 30 Euros worth of bills. Not so fun. Save yourself the hassle.

Also, Termini station is great for stopping for a quick bite to eat. There's a grocery store on the metro level, and we bought take-away meals and brought them back to the hotel for dinner. Saved us a lot of money-- 3.50 Euros for lasagna! There's also a bunch of fast food places (both ground level and metro level) and a Boulangerie (bakery) that has really great pizza (ground level, on the far end opening up to the street). The best food of the city is to be found at small, take-away shops, so skip the sit-down restaurants and go to the tiny, busy local haunts. You'll be happy you did.

My wife and I were pleasantly surprised upon arriving at the Blu Hotel Roma. The hotel was freshly renovated and the service was fantastic. Our room was large and spacious and our bathroom was clean and modern. The breakfast buffet, which came included in the price, was top notch. This hotel is located a little bit away from downtown Rome but getting back and forth on public transportation was a piece of cake. A bus stop is located just outside the hotel and it is only a 5 minute bus ride to the metro station.

On the down side, the hotel does not have room service. On a couple of occassions, I walked to a local pizzeria to buy some food for takeout (it was hot out and our room had great air-conditioning). The reception told me that customers were not allowed to eat in the rooms - period. I told her that I had never stayed in a hotel before that didn't allow food to be eaten in the room. Unbelievable! The cable TV service included only 1 English channel (BBC) which is about as much fun as watching paint dry. No FOX news! Oh well...Rome is not a place to spend your time inside watching TV.

All in all, we enjoyed our stay at this hotel and will return the next time we visit Rome. It takes a little bit of time getting to and from the center but for the price you won't find a nicer hotel anywhere in Rome. Happy travels!

The hotel itself was nice, clean, well furnished and pleasant exterior, but wht it is in that location I will never know.

The hotel was reasonable price, but it cost us a fortune in taxis and tubes. The taxi ride was at least 20mins to the centre and cost 17 euros one night to trevi fountains. We spent more on transport than we would've for five star in centre!!

The area its in is very sub-urban, graffiti everywhere and looks like the Rome ghetto.

You have to get a bus to station, then tube to centre, at night we got a taxi there and back as didn't fancy sweaty public transport at night. The information is mis-leading abnout this hotel's location. 2km to Colosium?? No way!!

Great hotel but location terrible.

I spent 4 days with my girlfriend exploring Rome. I wasn't planning to spend a lot of money and I believe that the price for the hotel was rather good (90-100 euros). For this price I don't expect everything to be perfect but I have to say that the only problem with the hotel was it's location.

So, the hotel isn't very close to the city center and that's the only problem. You have to take the (crowded usually) bus from the closest train station for 5-8 minutes or a taxi from the city center (15 minutes/10 euros). The hotel employee at the check-in desk was more interested in his online backgammon game than actually doing his job and that's it with the negative comments.

Room was big, clean and quiet. Nice furniture and fittings. Breakfast was average. Also there is not much choice of other restaurants/bars in the area.

That's about it :)
I do suggest that you visit the hotel if you're not too sensitive to minor problems.

Regards ;)

Brilliant hotel, but the location wasnt as near - but for the price you pay its was excellent - very clean (could see your face in the floor!) the breakfeast was very nice. Staff very friendly especially one guy called Daniel who told us everything we needed to know.
All airconditioned and minibar, hairdryer and anything you want just ask the staff who were very friendly

The location is slightly out from the centre - not a short walk from the station- but the 409 bus leaves every 5-10 mins and goes to Tiburtina - which is a main bus and train station, with loads of buses and trains/metro - not much of a nightlife near the hotel - but the transport links are so good - the buses run til midnight and then theres a nightbus - also plenty of cab numbers which you can get from the hotel reception. However coz there is not much nightlife, it is very quiet so no worries of outside noise or hassle.

a little TIP: instead of getting the Leonardo express train from the Airport - get a TrenItalie train to Tiburtina - takes 45 mins and cost about 4euros each (instead of 11euros for the leonardo express) - the bus 71 leaves from tirbutina and goes to the centre of the city in 35 mins or so!

Overall very good and worth the money - definitely recommend it!
