Having read the reviews on this site before I went I was worried about the hotel being a dive and being mugged by the 'rough' locals. Fortunately on arrival I realised that the people writing these reviews were slightly deluded. The hotel is admittedly next to the train station but any internet search would tell you that! We had a room on the railway side and had very little noise disrupting us. Also, having flown and then caught the train this lack of distance between the two was very useful!
So, the decor. People also complained about the upkeep of the hotel. Firstly, this is not the average hotel, especially in Rome. I got the impresssion that the people who hated this hotel might have been better of staying in the Ritz/Savoyesque hotels on the Via Cavour. This place is ultra modern and unlike anything (at all) in Rome. For architectural purists a modern building like this could be seen as sacrilegious. For those who like that sleek, minimalist design it is amazing. Admittedly there were a few things in the room that could have been neater, i.e. a few TINY bits of paintwork, but lets face it if you go on holiday how much time do you actually spend in the room? One final note however on the room. the person who complained about only having BBC news on the TV, really, there was also CNN but do you honestly go on holiday to another country to watch English TV? The thought of only having two English TV channels seemed like startling logic to me! Also in terms of facilities the library where breakfast is served and the pool are both excellent parts of the hotel!
I was amazed to read the reviews of the staff being unhelful! Every member of staff from the concierge to housekeeping and porters were flawless. They helped with every query and were fluent in English (for when my Italian broke down!) and could not be recommended highly enough. Maybe the people who found them unhelpful were making their lives difficult? Who is to say?
The location. Despite the reviews I realised that the hotel was not miles away from the Colloseum and central Rome. We found that by walking along Via di Giovanni and Via Cavour we were at the Colloseum within 15 minutes. This was not a long walk and actually was a great way to really suss out and see the 'everyday' parts of Rome!
Finally the people around the hotel. I was concerned by the area being described as rough. It became apparent quite early on what was meant. Unfortunately it seems that by rough the writers of certain reviews meant ethnic minorities who live and work in Rome who, after work, socialise with their friends by having a drink along the streets (remember that there is no law against this in Italy). This to me seemed perfectly sociable and non-threatening. We walked through this area a lot of times and never once felt unsafe! I find that when I am on holiday that I like to enjoy the city rather than cast judgements on the locals. For me, the area was just like walking through areas of London, a suburb full of different cultures and everyday people who work hard and relax at the end of the day.
Ultimately I can sum the stay up in one sentence:
Cool hotel, superb design and furnishings, good service, friendly and helpful staff excellent facilities and a lot of misguided, hype driven reviews on this site. I can't reccomend this hotel highly enough!
