I have just got back from a four night stay at Boncompagni Suites and would highly recommended it. Our room was spotless, quiet and modern. The room was warm enough at night, but we had french doors that opened to cool everything down during the day. There was an AC unit but we didn't need it. And the beds were so comfortable, it was almost like being in my own bed!!!!

The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful. They will bend over backwards to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

The hotel is in a quiet location which was good after day's sightseeing. While it isn't right in the centre of town it is close to the sights. You can walk to the Spanish Steps in 10 mins easy stroll, while the metro station and main Termini station are 10 mins down the hill. The lovely Villa Borghese is 2 mins away and it is also close to the Aurelian Walls. There are also two taxi ranks close by.

We found Rome a really easy city to walk around, but when we needed to go a bit further it was much easier to get a taxi to and from the hotel than use the metro. The furthest we went was to Trastevere where all the best bars and restaurants are. In the evening rush hour is cost us 15 euros from the hotel, off peak it was about 7.50.

From the airport to the hotel is 40 euros from Leonardo Da Vinci Airport and 30 from Ciampino. The drivers may try and charge you more but there is a local by-law that fixes the price to 40/30 euros to anywhere within the city walls so stand your ground if they argue!

There are of course a few downsides. The shower wasn't the hottest I've ever experienced but to be fair it is no worse than every Italian hotel I have every stayed in! There are also a couple of topless dancing clubs in the area which tout for business on Friday & Saturday nights. They only seem to bother groups of men and they aren't in any way menacing but they might put some people off. There are also no good restaurants that we found nearby, they are all overpriced tourist traps. Get a taxi to Trastavere instead. Finally, the walk back from the metro station is up quite a steep hill which I had no problem with, but somebody who has trouble walking might want to take into consideration.

So in summary, if you want a clean cheap hotel in a nice area then stay here. The only reason I'd think twice about staying here is if the hill walk to the station was an issue. Next time I'm in Rome I will definitely stay here again.

  • Liked — The beds, the cleanliness of the room, the helpful staff, the quiet location
  • Disliked — The walk from the metro station!

The comfortable rooms of Boncompagni Suites were just what we needed to end our trip on a positive note. The location-as mentioned in previous reviews- is not very close to most of the main tourist attractions though it is in a nice neighborhood. It is next to the Hotel Oxford which would probably be nearly twice the price. While it is true their is not much going on at night it is only a few blocks from Villa Borghese. The rooms and bedding is what sets Boncompagni apart. The rooms, while not large, are above average in size and sparkling clean. The bed was of Tempurpedic quality and the sheets were of a very high thread count. The neighborhood was quiet at night and the other guests were very quiet for our stay, which was a good thing since the walls were thin.
The locations is the second floor of an apartment building and there is a small elevator more appropriate for luggage than people. A continental breakfast in included and brought directly to the room since their is no common room other than a small lobby. Service was excellent and housekeeping did a great job straightening out our incredibly messy room. It is 45 euro to the airport by cab and about 15 Euro to the train station. Ten Euros and you will be at most attractions so it is not really that far from the action. Our rooms were booked through Italialoding and we were pleased with them as well.

  • Liked — Comfortable Bed
  • Disliked — Limited selection of restaurants in immediate neighborhood
  • Tips/Secrets: — Plan to spend some time at Villa Borghese, which is close by and uncrowded

We have stayed at the Suite Boncompagni for four nights in July 2006. The room was a small double, but it was modern, it was kept clean, and had a nice bathroom. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Breakfasts were OK too. The hotel is located in a quiet office area, some 30-40 minutes walk to the main Rome attractions (e.g., Pantheon). The closest metro station (Barberini) is 10-15 min walk. There are plenty of buses connecting the area with the centre, if you mind walking.

This is really a mixed review in that I think the location is not good for tourists; however, the accommodations and staff were quite nice (especially for 125 euros/night in Rome).

If you are considering staying here, I suggest that you purchase/view a map of Rome (then use mapquest or something like it) and see exactly where it is before you commit. In the heat of summer, walking from this hotel to most of the sites (forum, Pantheon, colisseum, Vatican) will be pretty unpleasant & time consuming. Additionally, arriving with bags from Termini (taking the Metro to Barberini) is not a good idea--it is a very long walk to the hotel. Similiarly, it is a long walk to almost all of the sites that a tourist would like to see (the closest is the Villa Borghese museum/Span steps--if you have a map of Rome--you will see that the hotel/museum are in the far Northeast corner of the city and most of the sites are to the south & west of Rome). I also think it is important to note that we did not feel safe in this area at night . Yes, the American embassy is several blocks to the south of the hotel, but that does not make the whole area beyond it upscale or well-watched. We woke up at 3am one night hearing a group of noisy people outside in the street throwing rocks--the police did not seem to be around. The area is mostly offices, so it is uncomfortably empty in the evening--we did not feel comfortable staying out late at this hotel.
I do have to say that the staff were very kind and helpful & our room was very spacious and clean--if this hotel were in another location (nearer to the sites), I would stay here again in a minute--even if it cost a bit more.

We stayed at Boncompagni during Easter Week, the most expensive time to stay in Rome! We were attending a family wedding, the church was just off Via Veneto so I began looking for accommodation in the area. Some of our relations/friends stayed in 3* hotels in the area at a cost of €350 per night (compared to our €110 per night) and they weren't a patch on our B&B! Just a few notes on the accommodation:
1. This is the best area to stay in Rome. The American Embassy is on the corner of Via Veneto & Via Boncompagni so you know that it will be a good area. All the five star hotels in Rome are on Via Veneto also. We walked home late at night and it is perfectly safe. Because the Embassy is here, there is plenty of police/security anyway!
2. Arrange for the B&B's taxi to bring you from the airport. By the time you have your return bus/train ticket, it is almost the same price anyway and so much less hassle(Italian drivers are very fast drivers so be prepared to tell them to slow down!).
3. The B&B is spotless. You get plenty of nice towels. The rooms & toilets are cleaned every day and you get fresh bed linen and towels every second day.
4. The staff couldn't have been more firendlly or polite.
5. Breakfast is adequate to get you started in the morning- juice, tea/coffee, pastries, bread with butter, jams etc., biscuits.
6. One of the best things about this B&B is that you feel ike you are in a hotel. You get your own keys and entrance and can come and go as you like.
7. The nearby amenities were brilliant: On the adjacent street, via Sicilia, towards Via Veneto, there is a fantastic restaurant where our relations had their wedding reception. A little pricey but the food is excellent, so if you want to treat yourselves, make a booking here. Stay away from the restaurants and bars on Via Veneto or in the main touristy areas. Bottles of Heineken were charged at €9! The local draught beer is nice @ €3-4 a pint. Believe it or not, everything in Rome is within walking distance so there is no need to purchase week long metro tickets. We did and the only time we used them was to go to the Vatican. Instead use the bus tour. €13 a ticket and you can get on and off at all the sites. Defintately make a trip to Tastevere. It's over the river and is authentic Rome, where the Italians eat. We had the best meal while we were in Rome for €28, 3 courses compared to practically the same meal near Via Veneto for €87!
When you come out of the B&B, turn right, go down two blocks and turn right again at the corner of the bank offices. A little up the sreet on the left hand side, is the best pizza you will ever taste in so many different flavours. About €2 a slice-a cheap lunch or supper! Buy ice cream/gelato from San Crispino. Renowned as the best in Rome. We only discovered it on our last day and we were heartbroken! it's in the Lonely Planet, again a worthwhile purchase before you go to Rome.
