Francois and Melissa Nicolas of the Nicolas Inn are wonderful, attentive hosts who truly enhanced our "Roman holiday"! We chose the Nicolas Inn based on our exhaustive on-line searches and favorable reviews from previous guests, and we couldn't be happier with our choice. The inn is located in the heart of Rome, but the real gem is the owners themselves. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome and at home.
The inn is located near the Colosseum and is within walking distance of many of Rome's landmarks. Public transportation, such as buses, tour buses, etc., is nearby, and Francois and Melissa will not only let you know the best way to get there, but will happily make arrangements for taxis, tours, etc. The inn is on a typical Roman city street. Our family enjoyed throwing open the shutters and hearing the city sounds at night; however, closing the windows provided a quiet night's sleep as well. The rooms are pleasant and very clean and are a size typical for rooms in Rome. The inn has various rooms available, from a large, spacious room with a king-size bed, to a room with two twin beds that our teenage children enjoyed. The bathrooms are modern and very clean, and the tub/shower had fabulous water pressure! The beds were perfect for us -- comfortable and firm, but not hard. It is not a typical bed & breakfast by American thinking; that is, the owners do not actually live on the premises (they live just across the street!), and breakfast is not served there. However, each morning we were greeted with a tray of hot cappuccino and orange juice in our room and given a card which entitled us to a complimentary continental breakfast at a great little cafe a few doors down. The cafe has wonderful cappuccino and pastries and a friendly staff . We stayed at the inn for four days, and we became "regulars" at the cafe.
The Nicolas Inn was all that it advertised to be and more. What their website does not convey is what a warm, welcoming couple the owners are. If you do not speak Italian, no problem. Melissa was born in the U.S., and Francois speaks English as well. Their attention to our needs knew no bounds -- their purpose was to make our stay in Rome a memorable one, and they certainly did!
