“excellent location, excellent hosts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2012

We stayed 9 days at the Nicolas Inn and we couldn't have been better located. We walked to the Colosseum, Forum, Borghese, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Capitoline Museums, Jewish Ghetto, Vatican Museum, Termini, Trastevere, etc. In the afternoons we'd take a break and head back to our Inn and later go back out for dinner. Our hosts always knew of a fabulous restaurant in whatever neighborhood we were checking out. They couldn't have been more accommodating and pleasant hosts. The Nicolas Inn is a great place for the visitor on the go. Clean, quiet, great location and personalized service!

We stayed with Melissa and Francois in early October for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Both were warm and friendly and provided wonderful advice especially on where to eat. The cafe they use for breakfast was right down the block and a fascinating place to have a morning latte. The location was superb and the accomodations spotless. If you are looking for a place to stay in Rome, this is it!

From the time that Melissa met us at the door, we were pleased. So friendly, gracious, and a breath of fresh air after traveling on the train. We felt we could just relax.

We were spending two nights in Rome, and we wanted a place that was close to the action, but still provided a quiet retreat at the end of the day. This was the perfect place. We were very close to Palatine Hill and the Colosseum, and everything else wasn't much further away. We did everything by walking.

The room itself was very clean and the beds and pillows were comfortable. It was also nice to have a place to go to in the morning for an espresso and a breakfast sandwich, which was part of the room rate.

They also provided us with great restaurant tips. One of our most favourite restaurants in Italy was the one they sent us to just behind their location.

If ever returning to Rome, we would definitely be coming back to Nicolas Inn.

Grazie, Melissa and Francois. You have a beautiful place, and you do such a wonderful job!

Nicolas Inn was a wonderful place to stay. Beautiful, sparkling clean, and convenient to everything. Melissa and Francois are wonderful hosts and full of advice and recommendations. I felt like I was visiting old friends in Rome. A great place to stay in Rome.

They only have 4 rooms so it is not easy to get in . Melissa is from the states and has married Francois . They both speak English and understand Americans . The reason it is better than family is at night they go across the street to their apartment. In the day they do a wonderful job of keeping the place clean and are very helpful with all the normal tourist requests. Breakfast is a kick. They send you to a bakery up the street and the food is fine but people watching the locals is a great way to start the day,

Rick Steves' was right.

As everyone has already said: Francois & Melissa run this place excellently, and really went above what most hosts do for you. Francois met us on the street (because the address numbering in Rome doesn't make any sense). After showing us the room, he personally escorted us to nearby restaurants, including the breakfast cafe - just so we knew exactly where they were and skipped the tourist-trap places. All recommendations from him and Melissa were great.
The room and bathroom were spacious - and actually had plenty of room for personal toiletries. The bed was firm in a good way. I wear earplugs, so noise is never an issue for me anywhere I go. "Mack's" they work.
Easy walks everywhere, just keep a map handy. I used the Roma Pass map the most, rather than the free one in the room.

If we make it back to Rome, we'll stay at Nicolas Inn again. It is easy to get to, easy to walk from, and they arranged our taxis to the Vatican and the airport - and made sure we got the right taxi each time as well.

Tips:
1) Getting there:You can walk from the train station, or from the train station take the metro to either the Cavour or Colosseo stops, or take the #75 bus from outside the train station. (Walk to the info point in the square outside the train station and ask to be sure, but you catch the #75 bus just to the left of the info point). The bus ride is great for less walking and is what we did with our luggage. You go most of the way down Via Cavour, past the Cavour Metro stop, and just past the yellow post office awning.
2) Getting to the airport: Francois arranged a driver for us to the airport for 50euro. It was a black Mercedes. The driver goes around the Colosseum & Arch of Constentine, Palatine hill, Circus Maximus, the Pyramid, & St. Paul's Outside the Walls. A nice review of places we went to. That might be the way any taxi would go.
3) Breakfast: in a cafe on the same side of the street just a few doors down. Melissa said "get anything you want" so we did. I usually had 2 big pastries and tea, sometimes OJ. We also went there for dinner one night and it was ok - I'd give it 4 stars for breakfast, 3 stars for dinner. The staff there are efficient, and can be hilarioius if you talk with them.
4) Gelato: Be sure to hit Giolitti's. Pay first, get gelato second. Gnutella flavor.
