Excellent location, lovely rooms and friendly staff.
We stayed at the Residenza Canali ai Coronari for four nights in late March. Based on the TripAdvisor reviews, Residenza Canali appeared to fit my requirements for a clean, very quiet hotel less than 200 euro/night. I was very nervous, however, because both my partner and I are very sensitive to noise at night and the hotel is in a very central location; just around the corner from Piazza Novona. Also, even though most of the reviews said the hotel was quiet, there were a few people who mentioned they were bothered by noise--- if anyone was going to be bothered by noise, it would be us, so we emailed the hotel and requested a quiet room.
We had the hotel arrange pick-up from the airport - very convenient and 45 euro (taking the train is also an option). We were given room #2 which was on the top floor. I was very pleasantly surprised w/ the room - the room was an average size for a room in Rome but the bathroom and balcony were large (i think only rooms 1 and 2 have balconies). Everything was very clean - this is not a 4 star hotel, so it is not super-luxurious but they are charging at least 100 euro a night less than a 4 star and I believe the trade off is well worth it.
What we liked about the hotel:
- Friendly staff.
- Clean.
- Quiet - at least our room was exceptionally quiet.
- Convenient location.
Things you may want to consider (none of these bothered us but they may be a problem for some)
- There is no elevator and the stairs are a bit steep for someone who has problems walking (I enjoyed using the stairs but it is not for everyone)
- The breakfast was fairly basic (though the same as other comparably priced hotels) and the breakfast room was a bit cramped. Again this was fine with us as there are many places to get espresso/pastries within a few blocks.
- Our bathroom was very nicely done and modern; however, the shower (no tub) may be a bit confining for a larger person.
Overall this was a very good hotel - it is not inexpensive but considering the rates in Rome, I think it was a good deal and I would stay there again.
Just got back from a six day stay in Rome. The Residenza Canale is a truly authentic palazzio hotel. Tucked away on a narrow side street (and therefore easy "not" to find, i suspect), it is set in a fantastic location for visiting the city. Seems to be just a stroll away from all the major sights (or is that "sites"?). Small and intimate, with really friendly staff who made great nearby eating recommendations.
Of course, the building has steep stairs and no lift, so not good for disabled or infirm visitors. We also found the area quite noisy with passing voices late at night (we sleep with windows open) but so tired after our days walking that this was not an issue overall.
Definitely an "excellent".
We stayed here early March and found the location central and excellent for walking to all major attractions, just off Piazza Navona, couldn't better that. Reception will give you a city map. Rates extremely good for being so central. The hotel was comfortable, bedroom spacious enough for two (room 6), bathroom well organised and spanking clean. All linen changed daily. Comfortable beds for a good night's sleep (although that could have been all the walking we did!). Fairly quiet street for Rome. Breakfast varied, substantial and tasty. Coffee was fine for me - re previous review on coffee - and breakfast room was cosy, not dark (the two windows look out on high buildings which is pretty natural for the centre of Rome) and very, very clean. As for the breakfast being on a 'first come first served' basis with no topping up, all I can say is that we certainly saw the fresh orange juice topped up but, also, there seemed enough food for the number of guests, especially taking into account the variety of food on offer- after all, you can only eat so much. I'm a savoury person so only had the delicious brown bread with ham and cheese (and some fruit) but my pal had a range of cereal, ham, bread, jam and even a pastry one morning and enjoyed it all.
The staff were very courteous and helpful and we finally met the famous Stefano on our last day who tried to book our taxi then, instead, walked us to the taxi rank outside (same firm) and carried our bags there for us. What a gent! Only two things you need to bear in mind: taxi drivers don't find the hotel easily (we unfortunately approached it from the back alley at night and almost lost heart) and there are stairs to be negotiated! But we wouldn't hesitate to go back.
If you turn right out of the hotel and then right again on Coronari, about fifty yards along on the left is a restaurant called Cantina del Vecchio. We had a fabulous meal there, nice wine and the service is first class - not over-attentive and not inattentive, just right. Customers were mainly Italian and groups of them! Went back again for our last night and unfortunately found it fully booked (Friday) and wished we'd had the sense to realise and book.
By contrast, we would never go back to Ponte & Parione on Via S Maria Dell'Anima just off the Piazza Navona, even though it did look so inviting. No courgette flowers on the courgette flower starter, no bread only for our table, tuna served as a burnt offering (really) on the mixed grilled fish, side vegetables forgotten then hastily served stone cold on hot plates, no offer to change anything - only a very brusque 'sorry' and no interest in whether we'd enjoyed or not. We came to the conclusion that everyone else there was a couple or a fairly large table of people (all tourists) and that two English women would accept whatever and not complain. Very disappointing and very expensive considering what we didn't get. And just a few yards along was a restaurant filled with Italians with a menu that offered tripe and oxtail dishes alongside sausage and broccoli or meatballs with beans and side vegetables such as battered artichokes. Wish we'd seen it first and sampled some of the lovely-looking basic Italian fare. Wish I'd noted the name of the restaurant to tell you.
We walked ourselves silly over three days, refreshed ouselves with a coffee or cold beer in the Campo de Fiori on occasion (just down from Navona), had a fabulous time and the Residenza Canali was a perfect base for all this. A definite recommendation for the hotel.
My husband and I stayed at this hotel in Feb 2007 for 3 nights. We would reccommend the hotel arrange a taxi pick up for you as it is very tucked away. They send a good standard of private taxi.
This is a small hotel on a side street near Piazza Navona. Although near it it feels miles away. There is barely a name outside the hotel but once inside you find a 24 hour reception, English speaking staff and a small but very clean en suite bedroom. Our room had a little balcony. Not much of a view but perfect if you are there in Summer for a seat outside.
As mentioned previously there is no bar, lobby etc but if you want a quiet stay with no fuss it's perfect. Great breakfast to set you up for the day. Tea and coffee making in the bedroom.
We walked miles during our stay but this hotel is equidistant to a lot of sites and it is possible to call in during the day and continue elsewhere. We felt no need for public tansport.
It was no problem for us but the hotel has no lift so be prepared to climb stairs daily to you room.
