My husband and I have just arrived from a 6 night stay at the Residenza Canali. This is our 6th holiday to Rome, but it was certainly the best, and a main reason for this was staying at this Jewel in the Heart of Rome.
I don't know where to start...it's position is perfect, right in the centre of the Centro Storico, set on the most lovely and pedestrian street..Via Coronai. It was so quiet we just could not believe we were in Rome! The decor was done with such love for detail: polished wooden floors and ceilings, rooms and public areas furnished with antiques and rich curtains. The bed and cleanliness were excellent, with lovely brand new bathrooms with top notch fittings and towels and toiletries. The breakfast (buffet) was first -class, with cereals, various types of freshly baked bread, yoghurts, meats, cheeses, fresh fruit, real orange juice, and last but not least, the pastries! To die for! Everyday a different type of cake or torta with croissants and pastries just baked..hmmmmm! Beautiful breakfast room with lovely damask tablecloths, fresh flowers on each table. Tea and coffee making facilities in each room (top quality once again)
Service always with a smile and always ready to help.
I could go on but all I can say is go and see for yourself. You will feel you are really experiencing Antica Roma when staying in this exquisite jewel in the heart of Rome.
Signora Canali and Staff, we will be back!!!

Our stay at the Residenza was very nice, but I wouldn't RAVE about the place; I'm sure there are other hotels in Rome at this price range that would work just as well. (We chose to pay in cash and got a discount.) The location was wonderful, of course, right by Piazza Navona, and I loved wandering up and down via Coronari, with all its antique shops. (But other hotels are equally centrally located.) And I already knew our room was on the top floor, with no elevator, so that wasn't an issue (we never use hotel elevators anyway).

Stephano, at the front desk most evenings, was very kind and helpful, even more so than the other staff, who were all accommodating.

Our room, #2 at the top, with a little terrace, was nice, though not as spacious as the pictures make it out to be. The terrace was a great feature, but we didn't use it as much as I thought we would, as we ended up preferring to sit and people-watch on Piazza Navona. (That's a comment on our preferences; for someone who likes terraces in their rooms, the room would be wonderful.) This was the only hotel we stayed at in Italy that had a hot water pot in the room for making tea, which was great.

My biggest disappointment was in the breakfast, which many reviewers said was great. I found the food the same as at many places; I only ever have a cornetto and maybe some fruit, and there offerings in those departments were fine. The breakfast room itself was cramped and felt windowless (I can't remember if there were windows or not). But no cappucino! (Regular coffee, tea and juice were offered.) That really bothered me. After the first morning, we skipped breakfast at the hotel, and instead went to Bar Mariotto, just at the entrance to Piazza Navona. There, we could sit outside with a view onto Piazza Navona, with a delicious cup of cappucino (including a dusting of chocolate in the bottom of the cup prior to adding the espresso - very nice touch) and a cornetto for about 3.50 Euros total for two people.

Bottom line, if you want a terrace and coffee or tea with breakfast, this place would be great. I would probably stay here again, despite the hotel's breakfast, because I'd rather have breakfast near Piazza Navona anyway.

And as an aside, if you're a runner, this hotel has a GREAT location, because you can run, basically, straight down via Coronari and run along the river in either direction, or run across Ponte Sant'Angelo and around the Castel Sant'Angelo, or even to St. Peter's. Even for a directionally-challenged person like myself, I couldn't get lost.

Management response from ResidenzaCanali, public relations manager

We would like to let Trip Advisor's readers know just few things about our Residenza.
We don't know if other hotels in this area work as well as we do, but we are very updated about their prices policy, and we can say, knowing personally the situation, tha we offer very competitive prices for our service.
Rome is a city with one of the bigger historical central side in the world, so that many hotels are centrally located: it depends on what you mean by central side of the city.We would like to underline that our Residenza could be considered as being in the center of the center.Even the Vatican city itself is less centrally located compared to us.
Talking about rooms: we have just two rooms with terrace, at the top floor, that are very requested. One is bigger than the other, and the smaller one is a very comfortable double superior room. The other is a Junior suite. The picures posted on our website are about the Junior Suite. This client had the Double superior.
We would like also let everybody know that we serve good italian coffee and cappuccino on demand. The ground coffee we serve is in our opinion the best you can find in Italy, and we cannot write here the name of the company to respect the Trip advisor rules. Generally speaking italin coffee is very strong compared to the international way of doing it, and not everybody, expecially americans clients, like it.
Our place has just ten rooms, plus the breakfast room, in a buildind of the 17th century.Every room has at least one window, some rooms have two or three. Breakfast room has two windows.
Of course, we cannot compete with a coffe in Navona square, because of the view. Navona square is less than one minute walk from our Residenza, and it is for sure one of the most beautiful sqares in the world, there is nothing like that ,it is unique. So we cannot offer to our clients a "coffee with a view", but there are no problems for italian coffee and cappuccino during our breakfast time. Just ask. We serve international and italian breakfast, and you can find every morning fresh cornettos, pastry, cackes, with a large variety of choise, that changes every mornig, not mentioning yogurt, fruit, cereals, tea and bread just cooked.

We phoned this hotel to book a room for 3 nights and the staff were so helpful and friendly. They will also organise a car to collect you from the airport for a reasonable price.

We were thrilled with our room which was on the very top floor with a terrace. As long as you don't mind stairs I would recommend this as the room was spacious and clean and just lovely. The Balcony overlooks the tiled rooffs of surrounding buildings but it feels so private and tranquil and a great way to start your day on the rooftops of rome with your tea or coffee.

It is set on a quiet cobbled street in the antique district of rome and so doesn't feel noisy and touristy and yet a few minutes walk and you are at Piazza Navona - (fabulous to sit and people watch by the fountains at night) and a short walk to the Vaican as well.
As it is centally located it is easy to get to all the well known sights as well.

I would definitely stay here again as the whole experience was wonderful and we found them exceptionally well priced.

In preparation for our honeymoon to Italy over the last two weeks, we made reservations with Residenza Canali based on a great recommondation. While we were in Italy, we had a few sudden schedule changes. When I spoke with the Canali's owner to work out the details, he could not have been more friendly, helpful and hospitable, including asking detailed questions about how we had enjoyed Italy thus far at our previous stops. It is simply this kind of person with whom I enjoy dealing, particularly with respect to something so special and personal as a vacation stay. Because of that and their great location, I hope to visit Rome again and when I do to reserve with the Residenza Canali.

We chose this hotel because of the positive reviews on this website and we were not disappointed. This is a delightful hotel. We stayed here with our three children in the family suite. The room (two adjoining) was great, airconditioned and location near piazza navone was unbeatable. Breakfasts were great. Yet, it was the Staff that really made this place fantastic. They were welcoming, (carried our luggage up the stairs), helpful in arranging cabs, tours and restaurants and and overall wonderful. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and we will definitely return.
