My wife and I had been looking forward for many years to seeing Rome. We had heard so much about the various sites. The Colluseum, the Vatican Museum and the Trevi Fountain. When my wife informed me she had booked a surprise break for us I was over the moon and counldn't wait to see the sights.
Our first experience of Rome was a taxi ride from the airport to our hotel which cost 55 Euros :-(
That aside on entering the Hotel Waldorf we were met at reception by what could best be described as an indifferent receptionist. I put it down to being tired after my journey and thought tomorrow is another day we are in Rome afterall!
My optimism proved ill founded. The room was dark and dreary and any thoughts of romance were quickly extinguished. We needed some drinking water in the room and when I went to the Hotel Bar I was greeted by the most arrogant young man you could imagine. After he embarrassed me, he 'sent' me with a ticket to reception which I then had to get stamped and return to him before I got my bottle of water :(
After my first night in bed I had bites on my legs from dear only knows what! There was not enough hot water to shave and merely a trickle of hot water out of the shower ... totally inadequate.
The breakfast at least was consistent with our experience thus far and they served tined fruit, can you imagine in a country which exports some of the most delicious fresh fruit in the world. The cheese and 'ham' if that is what it was, was almost inedible. Coffee undrinkable and tasted of water which had been passed through something unspeakable.
Once we left the Hotel however we were happy. Only my wife had to pay up front for it we would not have stayed one night there.
Don't spoil a trip of a lifetime by staying at the Waldorf, I can tell you now you will regret it.
