“Lovely gem off the beaten path”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2014

The Hotel Portamaggiore (or HPM as written on the door) is a gem! The moment you walk into the lobby, its warm and welcoming. It's not in central Rome but walkable to the Colosseum. Also as previously mentioned, the 571 bus stops right out front (be warned it doesn't return to the front door, but just down the street)... It's not free but no one ever checks tickets. All day tickets are currently 6 Euros.
The breakfast was plentiful (croissants, rolls, yogurt, cereal & cookies).
The room was large for Europe standards, small shower but large bathroom (shampoo, soap, bath gel & shower caps were provided and a hairdryer is included).
Alex at the front desk is absolutely wonderful. Very helpful and pleasant! Give him a raise!
They do not have a shuttle but they can call one and it was 14 Euros pp; which was better than the airport offered us.

This hotel was an excellent value in a city where hotel prices are high. The rooms are clean and comfortable and there are several nice restaurants nearby. The hotel staff is pleasant, especially Paolo, who went out of his way to be helpful and friendly. Although I agree with other reviewers who pointed out that the included breakfast offers a relatively small selection and the showers are a bit rickety, these are minor complaints in light of the low price. The primary drawback is the location, which is not within walking distance of any major sights. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone who is intimidated by using a combination of bus, tram and subway connections, and those arriving by subway (Metro) should use a steet map of the area between the Metro stop and the hotel to avoid confusion and extra steps. On the plus side, the neighborhood provides a welcome respite from traffic and throngs of tourists in the more central locations.

Room Tip: Request a room that faces away from the street to avoid any street noise.

While the area around the hotel is not the prettiest it is fine, i spent 6 nights in the portamaggiore with my girlfriend and had no problems walking to and from the hotel, it is a walk to the centre about 50 mins or 30 to the Colosseum and a relaxed pace, butt he metro is 10 mins away and stops at all the tourist destinations within minutes, hotel staff were very friendly and helped with any questions we had, room was spacious and quiet, breakfast was basic as was the food but that is not why i booked the hotel, next time i might look for something closer to the center but all in all great value for money.

Front of house staff friendly enough but could've been more helpful. Gave us wrong room key initially which resulted on us walking in on another persons room with all there personal belongings around!! We had booked a double superior (the highest spec room) and it felt more like a standard room and was quite small - don't be fooled by the clever pictures making it appear bigger! HOWEVER - for the price it was perfect for us. The room was cosy and had a view over the opposite ruins which was lovely. The complimentary bottle of wine waiting for us on entry was a lovely touch. Beds pushed together to make a double didn't quite work as were noticeably two different mattresses - one side comfy & one side not!! The tv channels were all Italian (slight downfall) but we didn't come to rome to watch tv! The location was not too bad either, a short 5-10 minute walk to Manzoni metro stop which was a very quick ride away from Barberini (Trevi Fountain) and other main stops. We bought a three day pass for the metro which was good value for money and very easy. Breakfast was a slight let down but again fine for the money paid. The restaurant is due a refurb I think, quite depressing lighting and feels a bit like a school cafeteria!! Milk was slightly warm but the cereals and bread selection did the job. Overall a very charming, if not slightly basic hotel but good value for money and would recommend to anyone.

We were booked into this hotel by our travel agent for the first two nights of our Italian adventure. The reception was friendly and helpful and assured us our room was in the interior of the building and therefore quieter than most rooms. Sadly not the case, the walls are so thin that people talking in the corridor sounded as if they were actually gathered at the bottom of our bed. Though its not the hotels fault if their school groups play hide and seek and run round the corridors at night and the elder tourists gather in corridors in the early hours to have full length loud conversations. This would not be my choice for a romantic stay in Rome. The building is old and wifi non existent and the breakfast was poor. We popped to the local cafe next door for fresh orange, great coffee and croissants and a good wifi signal. Location was good though, near train station and within walking distance of the metro and trams.

This is the worst hotel I've been to. First, it is very bad located, second the hotel is surrounded by horrible neighborhoods, third rooms are old and small and finally breakfast is not tasty at all. The reason why I chose this hotel was the price. If you decide to stay in this hotel please follow these suggestions.

1. Take with you your own soap and shampoo. Their products are very ordinary.
2. Before going to bed put on earplug protection. Specially if your room is located just in front on the street. It is the nosiest street in Rome. There is a bus station and an old tram just in front of the hotel.
3. If you can, do not book a room with breakfast. Their coffee is terrible, the orange juice is artificial.
4. Be careful when you take a shower. The shower curtain sticks to your body!!! That's Disgusting!

Bad location!
At first glance the hotel looked nice in the pictures, but once there that she disappointment.
simple room. The room had very thin walls. Because of the traffic right outside the hotel wars very noisy at night.
