Tucked in a little side street right off piazza navona, I jumped from the hustle and bustle of a major city to a quiet corner of Rome, all illuminated by candles on the tables, good wine and excellent service. When I approached the restaurant and looked at the menu the family at the table next to the menu told me they had already come back several times and the food was excellent. Although just outside of the Jewish ghetto, this restaurant offers traditional Roman food, specialties from the Jewish ghetto, and a few Italian dishes with a middle Eastern twist (the black Egyptian fava beans with spices were exceptional). I ate at a table just outside the restaurant and had the mozzerella and jewish artichockes and after fresh sea bream with spices (the house specialty). The food was fresh and the service impeccable. We let the waiter choose the wine- a Nebbiolo from the Langhe which paired perfectly with the food. We spent EUR30 each. Often restaurants in the city center cater to tourists who will come to the restaurant once and never come back and as a consequence the restaurant skimps on quality and service- this is not the case with Alla Cancelleria. I will definately be coming back.
