This is a lovely tradtional pensione in a beautiful apartment. It is advertised as central which I think is a tad generous. 45 minute walk to the Vatican is not central and it is a good 10 minute walk up hill from the nearest metro stop. It is close the to the Spanish Steps ( 10 minutes) and the Trevi Fountain but that is about it. We had booked a twin room and didn't get it. We were hardly bowled over with apologies as well! It was very much take it or leave it. That said, it is a very elegant property. Very old and comfortable. It was clean and well attended. Breakfast was acceptable and the host was friendly. Not sure I would stay there again because of location. It only has 4 rooms so it is very quiet. Decent accommodation for the price. Four keys are needed to get in and out of the hotel, some of the locks were challenging but that is to be expected for the age of the doors. My travelling companion adored the property and had no complaints so it may just have been me but if I book and pay for a central hotel and a twin room then that is what I expect! The hotel is not signed, there is an intercom for about 20 apartments on both sides of the door so check carefully.

I found a great deal on Expedia for Martina House and it's a hidden gem because I didn't find it listed on other websites.

A few days before our trip, Martina called us from Italy confirming our reservation, our arrival time and told us how to get to the B&B. That was such a nice personal touch and she definitely answered all the questions I had. We came here from Florence and arrived at the Termini Station. We bought the Roma Pass at the station at the information booth(includes 2 museums and all transportation for 3 days for 24 euros). We could have taken the Metro to the Barberini stop and it would be about a 10 min walk to the B&B. But we decided to take the bus and asked several bus drivers and they all told us different lines. It's a bit confusing so I would take the metro instead.

The B&B is on Via Veneto, an upscale street, right across from the Marriott. After hanging out at night at the piazzas in Rome, I felt very safe walking back to Martina House late at night. Very close to the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese. But put on those walking shoes because though it's a 10 minute walk to the metro or bus stop, you will be walking all day and that 10 minute walk at the end of the day back to the B&B could feel like a long time.

Our room (first one to the right) faces the Marriott and Via Veneto. I could hear the street noise, but wasn't bothersome. The spacious room and private bathroom was exceptionally clean. The electric shower made funny noises but I got used to it. I just hope it didn't bother our neighbors. I had no complaints at all of the cleanliness, cute Victorian-style decor, noise, etc.

In the morning, Martina herself warmly greeted us with breakfast - boiled egg, bread, cheese, butter, coffee, juice, fruit, yogurt, cereal, cake, etc. Light and simple. She is extremely friendly and knowledgeable, ready to give us advice on where to go eat, what to see, how to get there, etc.

Overall, a great place that is spacious, clean, in a safe location, and quality and simple breakfast, and hosted by the most friendly and hospitable Martina.

great little pension in Rome city centre. Martina house is a 4 room pension in a nice apartment block just off the Via Vento [one of Rome's most elegant streets]. It is a great location in a very safe area. The Spanish Steps and the beautiful Villa Borghese park are both on the hotel doorstep and all of Rome's major sites are within waking distance.
The rooms are a good size with a very large bed, sofa, and a good sized, modern, bathroom. All of the room doors are original 18th C with elaboarte mouldings. The beautiful cage lift up to the rooms is also original - a wrought iron cage with incredibly small timber lift cart within- big enough for 2 people only. makes getting the lift a real treat!
Our hostess at Martina House was very friendly, with great English and good knowledge of the local area - every morning at breakfast she was ready to offer advise on where to go/ how to get there etc. breakfast also was good, with a selection of bread, cereal, cold meats, yoghurt and cake (!) on offer each day
the sole downside was the noise of the Via Vento road. 2 of the 4 rooms overlook this road which is fairly busy with traffic and can stay as such well into the night. however, after 2 days of site seeing in Rome you will be so exhausted nothing will wake you - until then however it might be worth taking ear plugs if you are a very light sleeper!

All in all, a great find. Would certainly go back there if visitng Rome again and will be recommending to all friends and family

Excellent B&B. Close to Villa Borghese, Spanish Steps, Piazza del Popolo. Just steps away from the glitz of Via Veneto on a quiet, safe street. Food stores, restaurants nearby. Beautiful room, modern bath. Gracious host serves a very nice breakfast and assists with all arrangements. We had a great time and wish we could return tomorrow. Grazie mille!

What an amazing experience me and my wife have just had whilst staying at this hotel. First of the host 'Eleanor' the landlady who could not do enough for us, from making our lovely breakfast every morning, Eleanor was even kind enough to make us a delicous home made Tiramosu! ' i made it for you as the english love this dish' is how she put it and she is correct! The lady was also great at explaining the best sites to visit and when to go etc. I was shocked to see the odd poor ratings for this property as what more do you want for your money?? The place is spotless bed linen cleaned everyday, Large bed, spacious bathroom with great shower, For the price this place is surley unbeatable, the grand location Via Venento is slap bang in the middle of Rome 5 mins from the spanish steps everything at your doorstep we even walked around the majority of the trip as you are that close to the Vatican, Roman forum etc. There are also some wonderful places to eat apart from the pizza take away next door which is amazing!. Try il Duca in trestevira there lasange is to die for! Also Birreria Peroni on Via S. Marcello a 15 min walk from the hotel the roman food and beer again is quality, also round the corner is the Abruzzi which is brill too. All these three are cheap and have to be some of the best eateries in Rome. We also did florence on our final day, the train from Termini took 1hr40mins and it is well worth a look. So don't hesitate just get it booked what a City!
