After much research, we selected the Raffaello Hotel based on photos, close proximity to attractions and price. We were not disappointed. The rooms are charming - a few with a balcony for a lovely cocktail before dinner. Only complaint was that shower in our room was laughable -- looked like a cylindrical tube and barely accommodated one person. Hotel elevator said it could accommodate 3 people or maybe 1 person and 2 pieces of luggage.
Breakfasts were wonderful -- deliciousl hard rolls, danish, filled pastries, pound cake, fresh fruit, assortment of juices, eggs, selection of cold cuts and cheeses, cereal, yogurt plus plenty of coffee or tea.
Staff was extremely pleasant and helpful recommending 2-3 great restaurants in walking distance. They also assisted us in obtaining transportation from the hotel to the pier for a cruise departure (about 1+hour driving time).
If arriving by train from Airport to the Termini, you will need to take a quick cab ride as you will not be able to manage luggage over cobblestone streets unless you only have 1 piece of luggage. Do negotiate with drivers though since there can be a difference in price.
Also, if you will be in Rome for at least 3 days, consider investing in a Roma Pass that can be purchased at a nearby tabacco shop for 23 euros. You can travel on all trains or buses for 72 hours and it will pay for itself with free admission to the Colosseum bypassing the huge lines plus reduced admission to other attractions.
