My husband and I stayed at this B&B in July 2009 for 3 nights and were very pleased with it. (We found it because it was recommended by Fodors).
The room was very nice. It was not large but was decorated in a modern, spare style which we liked. They also included 2 free bottles of water in a mini-fridge, which were already chilled - a perk that we thought was inspired. For what probably costs them a euro (or even less!) they got a BIG plus in the Pro column. Our floor had a small lobby with individual doors to the rooms. Although a little odd sometimes to unlock the door and encounter a stranger, it was nice to have a seating area outside of the room (complete with a laptop with internet and books we could borrow). We were located on the 3rd floor, which is right beneath the breakfast room. During breakfast, we could hear the chairs scraping across the floor (our ceiling). This was not a problem for us as we were usually awake ourselves, but it's worth mentioning.
The room looked clean, although sometimes looks can be deceiving. There was a small hair clip on the floor when we checked in, and it remained there for the next 3 days. Granted, it was located on the floor within 3 inches of our bags so it was possible that it was missed by the vacuum but ... I noticed it. Also, the walls in the bathroom were spotted with mold - just a little and up high but it was a little icky.
The bed was very comfortable. There is no TV (but who needs one? You're in ROME). There IS an elevator - YAY!! An iron and ironing board was provided, which it wasn't in the other B&Bs we stayed in - another pro. Also, they used an electronic key-card entry system which made us feel very safe and secure. They also provide a cell phone for the duration of your stay (not for free, but still), which came in VERY handy. All hotels should do that!
The location of this B&B was very good - right by the Barberini subway station and a 30-minute-or-less easy walk to most of the big attractions (other than the Vatican).
The breakfast was very good - breads, cereal and fresh fruit with OJ and coffee. No toast, which we thought was weird as every other B&B we stayed at had toast.
The concierge at the Daphne was very accommodating. They give you a map, which is invaluable (better than the one we had) and map out where to go and what to see. We dealt with 2 while we were there. One young blonde girl and then Elysia. Elysia was the better of the two - you can tell that she really loves what she does, and sent us to wonderful restaurants that she patronizes herself. She also pointed out that the owners (herself and her husband) take the staff to the restaurants they recommend so that they can recommend them from experience (a practice I applaud). We ate at three recommendations of theirs (Osteria del Soltegno, Armando al Pantheon and a pizza place). Del Soltegno was wonderful food (try the chicken) although the waitress was mocking my ability to pronounce italian(rude!). Armando al Pantheon was amazing - great service and yummy food and wine. We would have gone again. Definitely have the Daphne make you a reservation, as we observed no less than 10 couples be turned away. The Carbonara was to die for. Bring cash if you can - they give you a little discount if you use cash. We were disappointed because it was our last night there and so we had no more cash -- we wish someone had told us. There is also a cute wine bar around the corner (go right out of the door and swing left around the corner -- it is there on your left with a cute seating area outside). Elysia recommended it as well and we had a wonderful nightcap here. The wine was delicious and the service extraordinary. The pizza place near Santa Maria in Trastevere was just OK, and was located OFF the piazza not IN the piazza, a distinction that would have saved us 5 minutes worth of wandering around. The service wasn't the greatest either. Elysia also recommended grabbing a drink on the roofdeck of a hotel near the Pantheon - if she suggests this to you, do it. The drink costs about 10-15 euro but they give you munchies and you can sit there and enjoy a wonderful view of Rome. Worth it. I only wish we had allocated more than an hour to sit there and enjoy.
We wanted to go to Trastevere, and the concierge told us how to go. Unfortunately, she got it wrong, despite us re-confirming with her exactly where the bus would drop us off. You do take the 116 bus, but you pick it up closer to the B&B than she told us - which was the first area of confusion. The second is that the 116 bus is actually a mini-van, which caused us to miss the first 2 that went by. And they won't stop if they don't have seats available - which made us miss the next 2 that went by. When we got on the bus, the guy didn't check our tickets at all nor did he ask us where we wanted to get off. The concierge told us that the bus would stop on the near side of this particular bridge. After a long, winding trip through the center of Rome the bus BYPASSED the bridge, and started to drive parallel to the Tiber. Glossing over a lot of detail, we finally got off the bus at the last stop - about 2 miles from where we thought we would be (the driver spoke no English and we spoke no Italian, which didn't help). We ended up walking to backtrack - no fun! - and then walking home (about a 50 minute walk). When we checked back with her, she was like "oh, well, it dropped you off at a bridge, right?" and was totally unconcerned that the bridge was 2 miles from where she told us the bus would stop! We could have used more precise guidance - that's all I am saying.
All in all, a great B&B. Some issues, sure, but who doesn't have those?
