It is always a bad idea to arrive in a large city with out accommodation booked - then accept the first place you walk into that has beds available, just becuase you are tired, cranky and lugging a realy heavy back pack! We arrived in Rome in the rain, lobbed into the M & J and booked a double room for 2 nights. The stench of rot as we walked up the almost vertical stairs to our room in the crawl space/loft should have rung the alarm bells but still we persisted. No opening window, the bathroom wasnt able to be used, and the smell of damp was over whelming. The roof leaked and our stuff got wet, however when the staff were alerted to this, they shrugged and said it couldnt be fixed (hmmm, looked like the problem has been occuring for quite some time). We were able to use the general toilets and showers which were dismal beyond belief - filthy, and drenched in water, constantly. Avoid the bar downstairs - rip off. Staff at the hostel were friendly on check in but as we had a few issues during the stay became less than helpful. We ended up leaving a day early, just to get out of the festering stench, but the smell clung to us, our bags and our clothes for the next 3 weeks through Europe. We stayed in some much cheaper hostels elsewhere in Europe and I would suggest giving this place a very wide berth. Only positive is the location, very close to the train station, but there are heaps of other hostels and pensiones in this area that you would do well to check out first. Unfortunately this place really spoilt our time in Rome.
