DO NOT BOTHER.
Walked in off the street and made a booking as the reception was very modern, and where told of great facilities,
Room photos looked great, was hopefull it was to be as great as it was made out to be,
Upon arrival, the staff were not friendly at all, rude, arrogant and not welcoming. They tried telling me I hadnt paid,and asked me to pay again. which was wrong, and this happened two more times over 24 hours when new staff had arrived. We were hassled every time we arrived, being asked who we were where we were from and had to check in every time via computer as my reciept was not enough evidence.
Rooms were disgusting, bathrooms were worse.showers are pathetic.Free breakfast was a joke. BAd vibe all round.
Never will I be seen near that hostel, I strongly advise you go elsewhere and save your time and money, mark my words!!!!

This was the worst experience of our 3-week trip in Italy. Be careful: appearances can be deceiving! While the rooms looked fantastic since they had recently been renovated nothing works and the staff was atrocious!

We came to at the M&J Hostel so we could spend our last night in Rome near the Train station. We were thrilled to see that the place had recently been renovated, but later found that nothing worked! We had booked a triple with a shared bath and when we arrived found that they double booked it and we had to stay in a room with a private bath for 35 Euros more! This should have been a red flag.

We then discovered that we had the only room in the place with a non-working TV and a broken AC! No one seemed to care that the AC was broken and they had no fans to offer us on the hottest night of the year! We had to try and sleep with the window open on one of the noisiest streets in Rome. We voiced our grievances at 3 different points during the evening with 3 different receptionist, but no one could help or offer a discount because the owner was no where to be found. Ridiculous to say the least.

Also, one of the receptionists was completely inappropriate with my sister. He kept touching her and saying very uncomfortable things.

Do not stay here! They are rude and dishonest!!!

This place scared the [--] out of me!
I needed a place to keep my laptop, they told me it'd be fine under the reception desk.
I came back later and the desk was vacant, and my laptop, and everyone else's stuff was there to be nicked.
A staff member was staying in my dorm and tried to pick a fight with me over the window! Eugene is it still too noisy?
Messy, filthy, dirty, unsafe, unclean. All but one off the staff will try to rip you off blind. Do not stay here. The only good thing was that there were some cool people also staying there.

Myself and my boyfriend stayed in M&J's for 1 night (thankfully) last June 2006. We were interrailing around Europe for 16 days and Rome was our last stop (although it was not our first time in Rome).

We had to trail our backbacks up a few flights of stairs. There were some renovations going on downstairs as far as I could tell and the place was very dusty etc. There was an old looking lift but it didn't appear like we could use it. I assumed it was for residents.

Anyway we got checked in and that was fine. We booked a private room. The room was tiny and very sparse but to be honest that didn't bother me too much. We only wanted the place as somewhere to sleep. It was painted a bright pink/red colour and there were 2 single beds in the room. We had a wardrobe aswell. The view from the window was all concrete, very unappealling.

We had to use the 2 shared toilets in our hall and to say they were filthy really is an understatement. The toilet seat was broken, the ground was all wet. I didn't even want to go to the toilet in them let along shower, they really were disgusting.

That night we found it very hard to sleep as the room was so hot so we had to leave the window open but there was alot of noise from outside.

Breakfast was included in the price but to be honest it wasn't worth talking about. It was a croissant and orange juice. I poured the juice into one of the few cups that I could see and there was some black stuff floating in the juice so that really was the final straw for us.

From what I rem the hostel cost us €35. Rome is an expensive place but I am sure that you could get better value for money elsewhere.
