We stayed two nights at the Villa San Lorenzo in early May for what I thought was an excellent price in Rome where I heard hotels can be more expensive. In fact, of the four hotels we stayed in while in Italy, this one was the most economical.
The hotel itself is newly opened and in beautiful condition with a gorgeous gated garden out front. Our room overlooked the garden which was lovely though, both the traffic and birds were a little noisy during the night (yes...the birds chirped during darkness!!). I think I would request a room facing the backside of the street for this reason.
The rooms, while small, were elegantly appointed. There is a bar area where the staff was very accomodating, allowing us to open a bottle of wine we'd brought from Tuscany and indulge in some antipasto we'd also purchased elsewere.
The hotel is situated very near the university in one of the latest 'it' neighborhoods of Rome (known as the San Lorenzo district). The area is rather deserted at night and somewhat overrun with graffiti (not the hotel - just the surroundings) but so is much of Rome. There are some fabulous restaurants in the area and it's only a 2 min walk to the tram which is very handy. All in all, I'd return to this hotel again 'when in Rome...'
