“Wouldn't go back”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2004

Stayed here at the end of november, and it was not very crowded. The rooms are small. There was mold all in the shower. Our room was right next to the breakfast room, which ment we were awakened everyday at 7am by the maids geting things together. The worst was that after 3 days neither our soaps nor our toilet paper was refilled. This only stopped after we asked the front desk for more toilet paper and we left a tip for the maid (I think it was the tip that did it). It is quite far from the main tourist areas but the train station is pretty close (not termini), and walking around for us is fine. I always felt safe walking around here.

“Definitely a budget hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2004

The first problem we encountered with this hotel was finding the entrance. What looks like the main entrance to the building is not actually the entrance to the hotel, but to the private parts of the building. The hotel occupies the left-hand side of the building and the entrance is tucked away around the left-hand corner, and is completely out of sight. It wasn't clearly sign-posted and this made it confusing for a pair of disorientated and tired travellers.

On the inside the hallways and stairs we small but looked neat and presentable and looked as if it had been redecorated fairly recently, except for the dining area, this has dark panelling which had clearly been there for years.

Our upstairs room was small with just enough room for the double bed, if you needed to sit down it had to be on the bed. However it was sufficient for our needs as we did not intend to spend any time there during the day. The room also had an ensuite washroom which contained a shower, toilet, bidet and basin and looked quite modern, I was surprised by the quality of the fittings, they were quite good. Due to a problem with the extractor fan trying to work through closed vents, black mould was growing on the upper walls, and it was quite pronounced. The thin towels were changed regularly each day during our stay and opened packets of mini soaps were replaced with new ones. I did notice that that during the morning there was no hot water, so it was just as well we took our showers in the evening. There was also a television mounted high on the wall, but watching it was a bit of a guessing game as we don't speak Italian. The bed was remade each day but I did wonder how safe our belonging were if the maids let themselves in. We did not have anything stolen though.

The staff on the reception desk did speak English, which was good, but with the exception of one young girl who was helpful and friendly, the other receptionists were rather indifferent in their attitude, not exactly rude but not friendly either. The breakfast was a very basic affair and comprised of one white roll, a pre-packed croissant and two small crisp toasts in wrapping with a small selection of jam and butter portions and a choice of tea or coffee. The coffee was very poor, I'm still wondering just what it was.

The hotel is situated in a quiet area a little away from the bustle of the main tourist areas. This could be a plus if you value a good nights sleep. When we found our bearings we discovered the hotel was just over 1 mile away from the Termini railway and bus station. We got quite used to walking there, though it did entail crossing a busy road junction, to catch the tour buses. There is a Pizza restaurant right on the doorstep of this hotel which we unfortunately over-looked until our last day. Its on your left out of the main gates on the opposite side of the road and just before you reach the main road. It appears to be used more by the locals than the tourists. The pizzas are quite good and the staff friendly despite not speaking much English. Definitely worth a visit.

Over-all we enjoyed our stay, but it is very much a budget hotel sufficient only as a place to sleep and get a wash. If you require anything more than this, the Galeno hotel is definitely not for you.

“Good place to stay, reasonable price, helpful staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2004

Stayed here in Feb as part of a package deal. Was a bit hard to find the first time, since it is off the beat and path but only a block away from the major streets and a few blocks walking distance from Piazza Fiume with cafes, gelato shops, grocery stores, great pizza, theaters, etc. Desk staff was friendly and houskeeping very nice (although had difficulty speaking English), served you continental breakfast of espresso, cappuccino, or latte, juice, hot roll and butter, croissant, and packaged melba toast. Not much, but they came back and offered us more each day if we wanted it. About a 10-min walk to the metro line B, 15 min to the Roma Termini, or you could walk up to the top of the street and catch the streetcar trolley. Private bathroom took getting used to, since the shower is located right in the center right over the toilet. Towels were flat linen, more like bed sheets, not terry cloth, but basic soap and a sample packet of shampoo was provided. Room was clean, decent, size was adequate, not big though, and the bed was full size taking up most of the room. Tiny TV on high shelf received limited channels, all Italian. Hotel occupies the first floor of a multi-story apartment building, so the gate is locked after dark at night, but you can press the buzzer, and they will buzz open the door for you. Never had to wait at all for this. I found it in a good location and well worth it for budget accomodations. Would recommend to tourists looking for budget, comfortable, but not deluxe accomodations.

“Think Twice”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2004

We booked this hotel through a very affordable travel package -- so we expected a bare bones hotel off the beaten path. But we didn't expect some of the little problems that would make this hotel simply an uncomfortable place to stay. I did enjoy the neighborhood. It was quiet and away from the frenetic, major streets of Rome. The breakfast was fine. But I would not stay here again unless it was absolutely the best deal I could get in the city. The staff was not particularly welcoming or rude -- but didn't really provide much help. When my boyfriend asked for an extra towel, he was told simply "no." They made us feel like we were imposing on them. The room was small -- and we expected that. But the walls were flithy and one wall even had mildew or mold growing on it. My allergies went wild. The shower was also covered in mildew, and because it was so small, it was hard to shower without touching it. I didn't like that at all. But the bedspread and drapes matched -- although the drapes were torn. It was a little depressing to wake up there and try to relax there. But we were only in the room a total of about two waking hours each day. So, if you are just looking for a cheap place to crash -- Galeno is fine. Just double check to make sure you can't get a little better place for the same price.

“It was decent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2004

I thought Hotel Galeno was pretty good. The staff was nice to us, and they all knew English, which was great. They also were extremely helpful in recommending places to go and eat at, as well as what train lines to take. They seemed genuinely happy that we were there. The only complaint could be that the rooms were a bit cozy, and that they did not have cable tv. It got somewhat boring in the small room with no TV at night to watch when we got in from sightseeing. Other than that it was decent. The breakfast was good, and who can complain about anything when your in Rome anyways. I would give it a B- for a grade.
