Hotel Fenix was a delight for me. I discovered that it is located just far enough outside the congested city center, in a beautiful tree-lined neighborhood (Trieste) where you will encounter mostly only Romans. Nearby there was excellent bus service to the Coliseum and the Roman Forum (take bus # 84) or to the Vatican (take bus # 62). This is a best-of-both-worlds location for travelers like me, and it’s not far from Rome’s main train station. The hotel staff was very polite, from the Director/Manager right on down to the chamber maids. The main lobby desk people are a font of information who can direct you to most anywhere, whether close or in the city center, and even beyond. Add to all of this Hotel Fenix’ beautiful, gourmet restaurant, a cozy, tiny intimate bar, a wealth of nearby restaurants where the locals go, and very good local shopping. I came away with a very rich encounter with these exceptional Italians, whether Fenix staff, or local merchants and restaurateurs right there in the neighborhood.
