we stayed here for 2 nights whilst on the Treasures of Italy Archers tour, and this was by far the best hotel we stayed at. The reception staff were extremely helpful in advising us on how to get public transport into town (which is quite a long journey - 10 minutes on the bus, then 10 minutes on the tube), so we managed to buy tickets and make the connection very easily. There is a nice little bar by the lobby, and the breakfast was good (cold meat, cheese, bread, the usual). There is a full mini bar frige in the rooms. Dont be put off attempting the trip into Rome alone, it cost one euro for a bus ticket (one way) and a euro for the train (one way). Buy your tickets before you travel, rememebr bust tickets are valid only for about 70 minutes after you buy them (and must be inserted intot he machine inside the bus to validate them) but you can keep your train ticket on you all day to use for the return journy - one ticket per journey. You can buy bus tickets from the tobacco shop just by the bus stop round the corner from Hotel Fleming, take the bus all the way to the Vatican where it terminates, follow the signs to the metro ('Ottaviano' station) on foot, buy your ticket from the machine inside the station (all in english and very easy), and hop on the train to 'Spagna', and you'll come out right at the spanish steps, easy and all done in 30-40 minutes. The trains run really late into the evening and are easy to use, so long as you dont dawdle getting on and off as the doors shut really quickly. So if you are on this archers/cosmos tour, how about not paying (quite a lot of money) for the optional evening excursions and doing it yourself for just a few euros, instead sit by the Trevi fountain or have a coffee at the Cafe Greco, or stroll about and people watch by the spanish Steps.

We were here in May on the Splendors of Italy tour by Cosmos. Was terrified having read awful reviews of Cosmos hotels and this was the first hotel on our trip.

We were pleasantly surprised. While this may not be our first choice of hotel by far(we stayed at the Delle Muse before we joined the tour and loved it - pls see our review of that hotel on this site), it wasn't too bad.

Yes, the location leaves much to be desired but we did manage to find 2 things that are really useful for Cosmos tour groups like ours.

1. The tiny grocery store that is in the same square as the hotel(walk out and go straight. it is the last store in the square, next to a meat shop) is a great way to save money. We picked up a huge six pack of 1.5 -2 litre bottles of still mineral water(aqua minerale naturale) and some juices and iced tea for 8 euro! When you see tiny 500ml water bottles being peddled for 1 euro at the sights through the rest of your trip to your fellow travellers you will see your savings adding up! We packed the unopened bottles into our half empty suitcases and removed one to drink each day of our trip and filled its space with shopping!

2. A great little bakery/takeaway on a street parallel to the hotel.Exit hotel walk to the left top corner of the square to get to the main road(2 mins walk), turn left and almost immediately you will see another quiet road leading off this main road, parallel to the one leading to the square you came from. Walk 500 m down this road(if you need to walk more than 2-4 mins you are on the wrong road) and to your left you will see a red illuminated sign advertising coffee, pizza etc.(caffe/pizzeria/pastaceria) They make great lasagna, grilled vegetables, pizza, heavier meat/chicken based meals all for takeaway. They pack in cutlery too which is great. We picked up lasagna, pizza and dessert for 6 euro and took it back to the hotel to have with our juices and tea from the grocery store. The hotel menu offers pizza and a drink for 15 euro per person and is not too great so this was well worth it at 1/3 the price for two people.

Taxis into town cost 12-15 Euro. Room air conditioning was not on in May and it was starting to get warm outside. So we slept with the door to the balcony open...if the air con isn't on in June it might be quite uncomfortbale, but in May at night it was pleasant.
There are better options for independent travellers but for Cosmos group travellers, it is not as bad as people would have you think! Room was clean, and neat, tv had English channels, lifts were normal sized and worked fine, breakfast was basic(ham and cheese with breads and coffee), room size was average (not tiny but not as big as one is used to either). Room was quiet and we got a good night's sleep.

I stayed here as part of a Cosmos Wonders of Europe Tour. I found the hotel itself to be clean, comfortable and reasonably well appointed, although internet access would help. However, with the exception of one waiter in the restaurant, I found all other staff, especially the reception staff, to be most unhelpful, offhand and even rude. I guess they don't make a lot of money out of people on package tours but I don't think that excuses staff being abrupt and stuck-up. The area the hotel is in is somewhat run down and it's a 30 minutes bus ride into town, but I did find two 'supermarkets' nearby and several small shops and all the people working in those were very pleasant and patient with the tired non-Italian speaking Australian.

Just returned from the Cosmos Splenders of Italy Tour. Had read all the reviews and was a bit concerned. The only problem with this hotel is that it is on a noisey street and not too many restaurants that are open on the first night we arrived (Sunday). In fact within 2 -3 blocks only 1 small cafe was open on Sunday night.

Our room was very nice and clean, in fact we were lucky and got a room that even had a small sitting room with 2 love seats - hardwood floors all around which was something I have never seen in the states, but loved about the hotel. It was cool in the evenings so we left our windows open and we were fine except for the street noise but again not a big deal as I was very tired both nights.

Breakfast was no surpise as I knew what to expect from the Tour, if you do not like cold cuts and dinner rolls for breakfast then do not do a cosmos tour. That was breakfast everyday in each hotel.

Our 2nd night we also had no problem as we went to dinner on the optional excursion. As we arrived late the first day I really do not know how hard it is to get into central rome from this hotel but I still had no problems with this hotel.
