We wanted a 4* hotel near the Vatican or in central Rome, for under US$200 a night - so maybe we were asking a lot - what we got was a suite (bedroom plus living room, with the bare minimum in furniture) in a lovely residential part of Rome - far away from the tourist area which suited us just fine (although it is A REAL HIKE from any of the tourist attractions, apart from the Vatican) - and 2 km up a hill, so if you have trouble walking, this isn't for you. Having said that, there are plenty of buses that can take you there - and there are GREAt non-touristy restaurants thereabout - so the area is great. The suite was pretty poor - enough hot water for only one of us to shower - and not even a bar of soap ANYWHERE!!!! I've never stayed anywhere in my life where there hasn't been a tiny bar of soap somewhere. But no, nothing in sight. Supposedly self-contained - with stovetop/hob, sink, fridge etc., but no cleaning supplies anywhere, not a sponge in sight - nothing - so if you make crumbs, you can't even clean up. VERY basic accommodation - 2* at best - but it was very clean - and again, the area could not have been better. Found some wonderful coffee shops where they greeted us like locals and made us feel at home - not like Central Rome where they treated tourists like second class citizens.... so would we stay there again? Probably not, we'd prefer somewhere more central, where it doesn't take 45 mins by cab to get home (when there's no traffic)....but if there wasn't something available in Central Rome - then sure. Great free internet access in lobby, using their computer.
