The location is basically the only good thing about this hotel. Lots of shopping, cafes & grocery store on the same street. There's a McDonalds right next door. That's where we had breakfast mostly since the hotel's looked gross.

The room was a decent size with a nice little balcony. There was an awful smell coming from the bathroom... it smelled like sewage. We had to go buy a can of air freshner since and it helped a little. But we had to used it every hour it was so bad. The bathroom towels were so weird. They were oversized dish towels. So thin and small compared to a regular bath towel.

The worst part is they have several teenage groups stay here pretty much unsupervised. The yelling and slamming of doors etc... went on ALL night long. We complained several times and even asked them to be quiet, but that made it worse. I don't know how these kids can go all day & night with no sleep. It only got quiet after 8am when they all left on their field trips.

If stinky rooms and loud teenagers don't bother you, then it you'll love it here.

I'm glad I didn't read all these horrible reviews before my trip to Rome or we wouldn't have stayed here. We arrived in Rome with a list of hotels and no reservations. After walking around past numerous hotels that were either sold out or over 200 euros, we stumbled on Hotel Republica. We asked to see the room before accepting and was a little put off by the hardness of the bed but choose to stay here as we were tired of searching. We really had no problems whatsoever with our stay. The "hard" bed was actually fine to sleep on - not uncomfortable surprisingly. The room was huge (we had a triple) with high (15 foot plus ceilings). Decor was a little dated but room and bathroom were very clean. There is some noise from outdoors but after a busy day in Rome, we had no trouble falling asleep. Breakfast was a variety of pastries and meats, cereal and yogurt - actually a better assortment than most hotels we stayed at during our two weeks in Italy. All-in-all this was a pretty good deal for the price (150 euro) in a city know for expensive hotels. Hotels was also right on the main bus (64) route to St. Peters and within a couple blocks of the Trevi Fountain. Victor Emmanuel building can be seen from Via Nazionale which runs in front of hotel and Forum and Colosseum a short walk down that street also. Overall I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a clean cheap hotel and is not looking for anything fancy.

We stayed there for 3 days and these were the most disgusting ones of my life...I'll give you examples. The first day that we went to that hotel our bathroom's drain trap was dripping.Their breakfast is awful , The only fresh thing here is coffee. And the most awful thing of all is the smell of vinegar.Even the bed linen was reeking of vinegar.Probably they wash them with vinegar in order to kill bacteriums..But they haven't discover detergent?Maybe vinegar is cheaper...I couldn't sleep from this awful smell...Their elevator has problem and wait from anyone to move your laggages to your rooms, you will do it yourself!Stay away from this hotel! Is full of PUZZA (=awful smell in Italian)

While on a school trip my daughter and her friends left for dinner and cameras and ipods worth over 2500 were stolen from their locked room. The staff was unresponsive. We have a police report and have tried to contact them repeatedly but they will not repond. I am appalled at the lack of security while housing teenagers. Do not stay here.

Booked through cheaptickets as a last resort because all our other hotel picks were full - started reading the horror stories about this hotel and got really scared... This hotel wasn't that bad! Granted we went in with low expectations, we found the location was great and we weren't bit by bed bugs. This hotel isn't a 5 star and there were signs of wear (torn wallpaper, worn tv remote etc...) but check in was smooth and the room wasn't too small. Breakfast wasn't anything special; which is typical in Italy. Didn't seem like the maid service replaced sheets but again we were expecting to be covered with bug bites. However... if I were to return to Rome, I would stay somewhere else (closer to Piazza Venezia) and shell out a little more money for a nicer hotel. We were travelling on a budget and didn't stay inside the hotel too long so for us, this hotel was tolerable.
