This hotel is a good citybreak choice - based on price and location in Rome, just off the Via Cavour, in a quiet street yet within minutes of the Termini railway station, so no need for taxis...and great for exploring Rome and its art and architectural historic sights, conveniently on-foot. We had sent an email requesting a balcony room but when we arrived we were told that the one balcony room had already been taken but instead we were offered what the receptionist described as the best room in the hotel. Later, we discovered that no rooms have balconies. Given some over reviewers' comments about small rooms, this is something to expect in Rome but we were very satisfied with our first-floor room and can recommend room 101 because it is a suite, with views over the street (yet we had booked only for a double/twin room!) This is ideal if your partner or travelling companion snores, as one of you can sleep on the sofa-bed! Each room also has satellite tv (but not BBC World) so 2 separate televisions can be watched. If we are being hyper-critical, a deserving little moan would be about the shower which was more like a tap...and a rather unpleasant-looking (and too short) shower curtain causing water easily to be sprayed on the floor. The breakfast is quite basic with both coffee and juice-drinks from a machine (not great!) with the main criticism being that breakfast finishes at a rather unnecessarily early 10.30a.m. The bar is a bit-of-a-joke being grossly understocked and with the receptionist doubling as bar staff (valiantly putting on a brave face given the bar's inadequacies)... so don't count on the bar as a great place for ambience and good choices of drinks because it most certainly will fail you.
These minor criticisms are more than compensated for by the hotel's good location and we found the staff to be both efficient and friendly.
For a choice of restaurants close-by, we'd recommend taking a left turn out of the hotel, and right into Via Panisperna (but avoid at all costs one of the closest: 'La Carbonara' which was our big mistake of our trip, if not the worst we had come across in Italy(!) - but the rest were very good, especially 'Do Do' on the right of Via Serpenti, further on. (Turning left is the Colosseum...)
So, on balance we would both recommend this hotel - principally for its location it has to be said - and relaxed, human-scale style - and we'd consider staying again, in the future.

The Hotel Canova is a short walk from Termini (the main train station) and 1 block from the main road. It is about a 10 minute walk to the Colosseum and Roman Forum and within walking distance of most other attractions. It is a 5-7 minute walk to the train station where you can take a bus to the Vatican.

The rooms are very European (small, not fancy) but very clean. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. We did not try the breakfast, but there is a gelatto place around the corner. The kabobs at the end of the street are fantastic as well.

I would recommend this hotel.

We stayed at the Canova for 3 nights as the kickoff of our honeymoon. We loved the hotel. Yes the rooms are small but that is standard across Rome plus we were not there to hang out in the room all day. The room was clean, the staff friendly and the roof top terrace was lovely. The hotel was quiet at night and very secure. We thought the location was great. A nice cafe right on the corner for our morning espresso and pasty. The hotel did offer breakfast and it looked decent however I am Italian and wanted to "do as the Romans do" at the cafe. We walked everywhere and did not require a cab at any time. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

After reading the many reviews, I was a little apprehensive about what the Hotel Canova would be like, however I was pleasantly surprised. The gentleman that was on reception in the evening was so friendly and welcoming and extremely likeable. The location was perfect - the main reason being that there is a metro at the end of the road and the many trattorias and restaurants around the area are very reasonable. We had 3 courses most nights for a very good price. We went over to Rome for the marathon and the proximity to Termini/Colosseum etc was ideal. The room was a bit small but I was expecting that but the main thing was, it was clean. Good shower and clean bedding. Breakfast on the roof terrace is basic but does the job. If you are looking for somewhere to rest your head, in a good location with no hassle, then stay at the Canova.

Our four night visit to Rome was marred by terrible weather but we had a warm welcome at the Hotel Canova. Our room was on the fifth floor, and small, but prettily decorated. There was however very little wardrobe space, and if we didn't feel like waiting for the lift we took the risk of falling down the steep stairs with a broken handrail.

We enjoyed the breakfasts which were served on a roof terrace (luckily mostly covered). We found the location very convenient for many of the main sights of Rome, and the street was quiet, but the area lacked charm, especially at night.
