Important stuff first: we accidentally booked a single through Orbitz and were charged an additional 40 euro per night (yes, my fault but 40 euros is extortion). We were forced to pay the rate of a double room but were unable to switch to a larger room (despite rooms being available). When I attempted to negotiate the rate (95 euros is insanity for the room) we were lead to believe that many people make the same mistake. I would imagine that the advertised rate of 55 euros very frequently is turned to 95 euros at check in.
This hotel was traditional European style. Small rooms with recently added bathrooms, 33 rooms, free breakfast downstairs. The mattress was awful and the shower tiny.
It's funny that the reviews for service on this place are so hit and miss. The desk manager Marco (who seems to be at the desk most of the time) is friendly but direct. I can see how you could come away from an interaction with him with different ideas about his level of service. We blew a circuit in the room and he was very short with us. The location is not central but we didn't mind the walk. We spent a very nice three hours of the first day walking from the hotel, across the Tiber, and down Via del Corso (the shopping drag) to the forum and Colosseum. It is a 15 minute walk to the Metro but the bus is very close and cabs are cheap and include a free adrenaline rush (there's a cab stand a block away with licensed Roman taxis 24 hours a day).
One last thing... we were right on the street but heard NOTHING during our three night stay. Very quiet!
