Listen, if you are looking for an affordable, small boutique hotel located near the major sights in Rome, with a comfortable air-conditioned bedroom and a spacious bathroom, this is your place. It will certainly be mine whenever I am in Rome again. Yes, the breakfast is pretty dreadful, but we don't go to Rome to eat breakfast, and there is an outdoor cafe just 3 minutes away on foot at the base of the Via Veneto that serves an American-style breakfast, if that is your thing. There is a lovely and reasonably-priced rooftop restaurant for dinner and/or just cocktails. The staff is lovely, if you just take a minute to talk to them. The hotel is NOT expensive, whatever the people from the UK may say, and it seems to me that if you lose your wedding ring and a maid finds it in the vacuum cleaner and returns it to you, you shouldn't accuse them of stealing it. That's just not cricket, old chum.

Ottocento is in a perfect location -- minutes from the Piazza Barberini, Vio Veneto, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Via Del Corso. The reception staff is either wonderfully friendly or appallingly dismal and disinterested. At over 230 euros a night, there is no excuse for a lack of exceptional service. The breakfast is awful -- we switched to this hotel after a bad experience at another hotel, and the breakfast at the other hotel was better. There was literally nothing offered but cereal, breads, and stewed fruits, and a plate of ham and cheese that smelled rank. The breakfast was so far from what the hotel looks like it was almost unbelievable. I thought we had wandered into a youth hostel. The wait service was poor -- no smiles, greeting, or enthusiasm; no checking on us if we wanted more tea/coffee, and no way to get more of this unless they returned (which they didn't). Oddly, room service was excellent and the dinner was very good value; but breakfast was substandard. Cleanliness was good, though the room wasn't serviced until well after noon. When we requested a taxi in the morning to go to the airport (Ciampino) they said 65 Euros -- we went to our room and looked online and found it for 35. My husband went to the front desk to ask about the discrepancy and book the cheaper taxi, and the surly front desk man informed him that he couldn't cancel the private car, period. I have to say, Rome in general has deteriorated, is now filthy, overcrowded, extremely overpriced, and offers little to travelers who are used to 5 star quality. Having recently stayed in NYC, London, and Paris, I am sad to say all aspects (food, shopping, hotels, transportation) of this trip were more than double in price of those other cities, and for equal to or less quality.

My husband and I travelled to Italy for our honeymoon in October of 2008, and Rome was our first stop. Albergo Ottocento was a beautiful hotel with friendly staff, and our room was always clean and fresh. One problem, though. His wedding ring was stolen. After searching high and low, we contacted the front desk and hours later, a cleaning staff "magically" found it in her vacuum and returned it to us. Rings are far too heavy to get sucked up. Make sure to lock everything up in the safe, and hide things in socks as well.

The Ottocento was a great find at the last minute for us. We had a triple room 110 which although smallish was new and well appointed with a great bathroom. Clean and with free wi fi internet access. The staff were excellent and the breakfast more than adequate. The location is GREAT. Very convenient to many must dos for Rome. Can highly recommend this hotel.
