One would think that a one or two star hotel wouldn't be up to standard. I was quite apprehensive upon getting there. The lift was very small and quite ancient, and knowing it was quite cheap, I dreaded getting there.
I was to be proven wrong. The receptionists are really lovely, very helpful lot who do make an effort. Their smile is genuine, and their spirited love for the city would prove useful whenever we needed help with anything.
The linen was very, very clean, and there wasn't a single hygiene defect in the room. The sheets were crisp, the bed done really well, the bathroom facilities, although basic, were very efficient and the breakfast was quite satisfactory as well. The coffee machine didn't make the best coffee in the city, yet they had tea, freshly baked bread and pastries... They certainly don't cook bacon, sausages and poached eggs, yet that didn't bother me at all, since their smell early in the morning upsets me anyway.
I do however understand why there's a negative review. Venturing outside the hotel street, towards the East of the city one comes across dodgy looking people... people from every nationality trying to sell you fake watches and hand bags. I must say that they are quite annoying, but unfortunately you'll come across them in all parts of the city. The street where the hotel is situated however is very safe. There are dozens of hotels and restaurants so it's quite lively at night.
I think I might be back quite soon! Bottom line: delightful personnel, excellent hygiene, decent breakfast and a wonderful city. Highly recommended, but especially to those on a budget who are not looking for a hotel with amenities such as swimming pools, gym and so on.
