We didn't stay at the main Beehive, but stayed at their Millefiori apartments & did not like the experience. The apartment basically has 3 rooms, with a shared bathroom & kitchen. The rooms can each be rented out separately (no need to rent the whole apartment).

The things we did not like about the apartment are:

1. The floor/ground shakes in the apartment when someone is walking around - as if there is an earthquake. It feels really creepy.
2. Though they provide Internet access, the computers are probably what the Flintstones might have used - terribly slow!
3. The apartments are on the other side of the Termini station & the neighborhood gets a little desolate & quiet late at night. Thankfully, we didn't have any untoward incidents.
4. The apartments don't have any attendants / ready help. You need to contact the main Beehive for anything & everything (the main Beehive is a good 10-mins walk away from the apartment).
5. No breakfast is provided at the apartment. They didn't have any milk/bread there so that we could have our own breakfast.
6. No Aircon or fan or heater in the room - you are at the mercy of the elements.

Lastly, the Beehive is ridiculously priced. We paid 80Euros per night for the apartment - we found a hotel with Aircon & attached bathroom for less than 60Euros the next night! :(.

The only good thing about the Beehive - their organic cafe at the main Beehive. They cook fresh, vegetarian food there using organic materials which tastes simply fantabulous! And thankfully, you pay as you see fit for the food - no fixed prices.

All in all, do goto the Beehive for a meal - don't stay there!

Management response from LindaatTheBeehive, Owners

We're sorry TheTravelingHorse did not enjoy their stay at one of our off-site shared apartments. We have had many guests who liked staying at the apartments and actually request them on subsequent trips to Rome. They are offered as an alternative when The Beehive is full or if someone wants their own cooking facilities. However, the rooms at the apartments are not everyone's taste and that is why we are so detailed about them in e-mails as well as in the FAQ section located on the apartment page. All the issues commented on are characteristics that we describe with the utmost clarity and transparency both on our website and in e-mails and no one is booked in these rooms unless they specifically request it or if we make the suggestion and they accept it. We also just want to be clear that the price paid was 70 euro per night, not 80 euro (which is the rate at the main Beehive location). We don't believe it is helpful to other travelers or fair to the hotel for guests to complain about things that they were made well aware of in advance if they would have taken the time to read the information provided before the booking was confirmed.

the apartments that they provide are a 15 minute walk from the main beehive. I found the apartment rooms to be nice, with internet acess in the main suite, but the room has no air conditioning which can be brutal in the summer. the cost of the place is very reasonable and the people are very friendly. it is a good deal for rome which tends to be very expenseive. if you want to be in termini area, you will be in good striking and walking distance to all the main sites of the forum and colluseume. a good budget hotel.

Great Location to the train station but that's it. Loud at night.

The location is very close to the train station and bus station which is nice. I was told by my cousin that it is good to be close to the train station for convience. I would not stay here again and here's why. The whole place has tile floors so you can hear everything. All the doors have skeleton keys with a big clunky number attached. The doors are hard to work and there are notes on the bathroom doors on what to do it you get locked in (which happed to me). We were woken up every night more than once by someone trying to unlock their door. One night around 3:00 in the morning I had to go to the front desk to tell them someone was locked in the bathroom. Apparently they could not hear the womans knocking and calls for help but I could. Also above our room was some sort of generator that went on and off all day and all night about every 3 minutes. When we went into the heart of Rome is was so much more amazing with more to do and restaurants to choose from. We wished we hadn't stayed by the train station.

EXCELLENT value for money. Really stylish and clean rooms. Polite staff. Lovely building etc in a convenient location - right near the bus and train station. Nice little touches like the amazing honey and orange soap etc.

Beehive seems to pride itself on being a little "different" in everything they do.... which they mostly do very well. We ourselves thought their ideals sounded fab before we visited but during our visit we realised that this aspect made us feel a little uncomfortable. Not that this is a bad place to stay AT all! But it seems a shame that this place has such a strong identity that were it not for the very polite Italian reception staff you would think this place could be based in any place in the world.... no Italian flavour at all. I would recommend this place to anyone.... BUT:

1. Organic food is great, but in Italy, a country of meat eaters... it seems a shame not to have Italian style meat dishes on the cafe / restaurant menu. Understandably that may be the owners preference....

2. Another cafe note - The Beehive are part of a food movement that means there isn't a price list, simply a menu. The information at the table states there's no portion control and you can have as little or as much as you want, then pay what you think is a reasonable price. I myself ordered scrambled eggs on toast when there were just two other customers there. It arrived in front of me about 40mins later. Fair enough you say - this IS very Italian. In Rome however service is extremely fast in general. This is not my only issue. As we hadn't yet read the information on these food ideals, I was presented with a breakfast of 2 eggs worth of scrambled eggs and one slice of home made bread. The portion was tiny! This barely filled a corner of my stomach! I'm sure you'll agree, for a days sightseeing you need something substantial in your stomach. Having already waited 40 mins for round one, we simply left and had a breakfast no. 2 as we were walking around Rome. Feeling a little put off our Beehive experience simply by breakfast... what is a fair price to pay for breakfast which leaves you needing to buy a second??? It made us very uneasy about paying, eating there again etc. and in fact we found making a decision about what to pay for something that we felt was a let down very uncomfortable - we're fair people but are on a budget like any other person, we didn't want to appear rude but had to pay what was fair for needing to afford a second breakfast. ALSO - Italy makes the most delicious bread, my slice of bread had been made in a Morphy Richards style / electric breadmaker and was more like a slice of Warburtons than the delicious doughy bread you usually get in Italy... A trip to the local bakery would be much more tasty! And a second slice of bread would have been a nice gesture!

Overall - would definitely recommend this place. So reasonable price-wise in comparison to other places in Rome. Really comfortable, modern, well-kept and convenient. If you do stay here make sure you sample all the delights of Rome - outside of the Beehive food wise. If you do have brekkie and ask for scrambled eggs, make sure that whoever takes your order is aware that you will need a portion larger than that you would give a 5 year old.

Agree with most other reviews. The Beehive can't really be faulted for its combination of value, comfort and service.

I stayed there with my girlfriend for three nights over Easter and we were very impressed by the friendliness of the staff, the decor and comfort of our double room, and the general relaxed atmosphere around the place. Free internet use on the hotel's Apple computer was also very useful.

Breakfast at the cafe could have been a bit better – my girlfriend's scrambled eggs were far too runny – but you can set your own price, so this is a minor complaint.

The location of The Beehive is perhaps its only drawback. If you are traveling from Rome's main Termini station, it's perfectly located (5mins walk), but for Rome's main tourist attractions, you need to get the bus, tax or metro; otherwise you're faced with at least a 25min walk.

We paid €240 for three nights – not cheap for a hostel, but then The Beehive is more of a hotel. We'd stay there again, no question. If only all hostels were this good.
