“Nice hotel, but don't count on the 'concierge' service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2004

My husband and I recently stayed at the Beehive in late November. We spent part of our time in the main hotel and part of the time in the Montefiore apartment. We were generally pleased with the hotel and apartment. They were clean and quiet and in close proximity to the train station. I would recommend the Beehive to anyone looking for inexpensive and convenient accommodations in Rome. However, the recommendation is subject to the following caveats.

First, and what I believe is most important, THE BEEHIVE ONLY ACCEPTS CASH AS PAYMENT. And they ask for the cash up front upon check-in, which meant that for a ten day stay we had to carry 700 Euro (approximately $1000) from the States to Rome. After witnessing some tourists get pickpocketed at the Forum, and knowing that such an experience is not altogether too uncommon, I find the policy disappointing. I would have preferred to be given the option to pay cash or pay slightly more to a use credit card in order to protect ourselves against petty crime.

Second, their so-called "concierge" service leaves much to be desired. For example, we asked for tickets to the opera, and were told to make those arrangements ourselves. Also, the staff members were not always "native" English speakers, so there were times where miscommunication occurred.

In my opinion, "concierge" is really a misnomer. To me, they functioned more like typical front desk staff that you would encounter at any average hotel.

Finally, there are no private bathrooms. If private bathrooms are an important feature for you, this is not the hotel to stay at.

As a final note, we preferred staying in the apartment to staying in the hotel. It was quieter and closer (though only slightly) to most of the main attractions.

Stay here if you can get a room.

1. It's a bargain.
2. It's spotless
3. You can see the Termini from the door yet the street is quiet.
4. They've got a really cute fat cat who's a dude called Ingmar.

Only strange thing...why do they have 550 euro paintings for sale on the walls? That's more than I spent on my four day break in Rome! It's like a selling caviar from a burger van.

What a great expereince, I only wished I had more than one night. The hotel was extremely clean and beautifully decorated. The room was excellent, and amongst the biggest I encountered in Italy. I did not have a private bathroom, however the shared bathrooms were just two doors down the hall. Each shared bathroom had its own door, and they were all very clean. Considering the room had its own sink, it almost didn't feel like the bathrooms were shared. The staff was extremely courteous, fluent in English, and very helpful. Although the location near the Terminal might not be that ritzy, its proximity to the subway is a big plus. And on top of all that, it was the cheapest hotel I could find in Rome!

Just got back from Rome after staying in Clover apartment. It is a great way to stay in Rome on a budget without slumming it. The apartment was spotlessly clean and the other people staying there were likeminded and everyone seemed to respect each others space. It is only two blocks from the Metro and two blocks from a fantastic indoor market where you can get all your food at good prices. We were two girls and the neighbourhood was fine after dark. Ican't wait to go again!!
