As I had spent 2 hours in the travel agents choosing the San Marco hotel I was annoyed to find on arrival there that it was over-booked and we were re-located to hotel Galles around the corner. However, the Galles was warm, clean and just as convenient for the attractions. The down side was the restaurant only opened for groups so we weren't welcome there and the bar was closed down. As I was travelling with my mum, a hotel bar where we could have a drink on the premises at the end of a tiring day would have been convenient. The hotel lounge was permanently in darkness and therefore empty . The continental breakfast was adequate and all pastries and rolls were fresh. There was a wonderful family run trattoria further along the road (about 200 yards away) which was well worth a visit. The reception staff were pleasant enough and after asking for a recommended restaurant on our first night , we were escorted by a friendly porter! All in all we had an enjoyable experience in Rome

We were travelling with my sister and her husband and intially booked for four people into what we assumed would be a suite with two bedrooms. We were so wrong! We were given a room with 4 beds side by side! We were so exhausted from travelling that we spent the first night in this room but in the morning we asked for two separate rooms. This was given to us on the same floor, but at an extra cost. There was no mention of any other type of suite. Apart from this we found the hotel okay. It did include buffet style breakfast in the basement.

Location: Quiet street, close to Termini Station, easy access to most of Rome's attractions. Takes a bit of walking to reach some of them (the Colosseum for example) but there's nothing better than a nice walk in central Rome, especially when the weather is nice!

Rooms: We got a spacious room with a bathroom of good size and a charming little terrace. Have no idea about other rooms in the property, maybe we were just lucky with ours.

Staff: No complains.

Breakfast: Nothing special. Skip it.

Overall impression: Good choice if you don't plan to spend the day in your room but still would like to come back to a clean and comfortable place in the evening.

We stayed at the Galles Hotel in late July and overall, it was a good experience. We (2 adults, 2 children) stayed in a quad room. The hotel was only a block away from a Metro stop, and was a few blocks from Termini station (easily walk-able with some luggage).

We had plenty of space, with 2 fold-out beds downstairs and a queen bed in an upstairs loft. The room was clean and everything was in working order. The bathroom was a bit cramped for American standards, but nice compared to other Italian baths we had seen. The management and staff were all friendly, and the front desk clerk spoke good English and was helpful. Breakfast was nothing special, but was typical Italian morning fare.

The only problem that we encountered here was that the water was not potable (small sign on the bathroom mirror), so we were sure to keep bottled water on hand. Also, if I were to visit Rome again, I would try to find a location more central to Spagna or Trevi, as that's where the night-time action is (and the Metro closes at night!), but for a good place to stay, this is a fine choice.

  • Liked — clean and convenient to the Metro
  • Disliked — not centrally located, so couldn't walk to most attractions

I stayed there for business for a couple of nights in mid-week recently, in Room 212. The room I was given was very spacious but with a dated decor and smelt of damp. The bathroom was huge but didn't have a bath tub just a shower. Curiously there was no gel shower supplied to guests along with the shampoo and towels. The room was clean, with wooden floor throughout, twin beds with a mattress softer than a waterbed which was very uncomfortable. The bed was mounted on large castors (wheels) and was moving as one turned in bed.
The main problem was the old air-conditioning system which was working but very noisily indeed, which resulted in 2 consecutive sleepless nights.
The hotel is located just by the metropolitana station ("Castro Pretorio") and therefore very convenient.
Breakfast offered had a decent selection of danish pastry (brioches, croissants, cakes, etc.) as well as ham and cheese or fruit salad straight out of the tin.
Reception staff can be so-so, some are welcoming while others are just unco-operative. Don't be surprised to find the non-English-speaking maid doing your room as you come back up to your room after breakfast either! You'll have to wait if you may want to brush your teeth... ;-)

My conclusion:
May just be OK for one night! But you still won't want to come back for more later. There is a very large choice of hotels in Rome and in the area nearby indeed, so make sure you pick the right one.

  • Liked — Large spacious room (might not all be)
  • Disliked — Sleepless nights due to extra-soft mattress and noisy A/C system
