I stayed there for business for a couple of nights in mid-week recently, in Room 212. The room I was given was very spacious but with a dated decor and smelt of damp. The bathroom was huge but didn't have a bath tub just a shower. Curiously there was no gel shower supplied to guests along with the shampoo and towels. The room was clean, with wooden floor throughout, twin beds with a mattress softer than a waterbed which was very uncomfortable. The bed was mounted on large castors (wheels) and was moving as one turned in bed.
The main problem was the old air-conditioning system which was working but very noisily indeed, which resulted in 2 consecutive sleepless nights.
The hotel is located just by the metropolitana station ("Castro Pretorio") and therefore very convenient.
Breakfast offered had a decent selection of danish pastry (brioches, croissants, cakes, etc.) as well as ham and cheese or fruit salad straight out of the tin.
Reception staff can be so-so, some are welcoming while others are just unco-operative. Don't be surprised to find the non-English-speaking maid doing your room as you come back up to your room after breakfast either! You'll have to wait if you may want to brush your teeth... ;-)

My conclusion:
May just be OK for one night! But you still won't want to come back for more later. There is a very large choice of hotels in Rome and in the area nearby indeed, so make sure you pick the right one.

  • Liked — Large spacious room (might not all be)
  • Disliked — Sleepless nights due to extra-soft mattress and noisy A/C system

This could be/was an impressive hotel, many years ago. Time and lack of refurbishment have taken their toll. The staff varies from cooperative English speakers in the day to non cooperative non English speakers, manning the graveyard shift...who is really happy working all night ?

The hotel is next to two more hotels, not interconnected, and apparently under the same ownership. When our tour group of over 40 arrived at the stated time, our rooms weren't ready, so we trooped a block to the rear to store our luggage until said rooms were ready. Note to older travelers or those with mobility problems...many rooms have been redesigned as lofts with a steep set of stairs to the bed area. AC rated by all as uniformly nonexsistent, so summer could be a very unhappy experience as Rome hit's the 80's and above. Furnishings o.k., but like the opulent lobby furniture...it saw it's best days many years ago. I don't know if the rear hotel, where we stayed, is tourist only, but it is where we all were put. It has a minature, and I mean minature elevator (which for some reason, doesn't correpond to the floors...for example, the first floor is "zero") It will take you to the top floor...I forget whether it was four or five (three on the elevator). and from there, there is a "ships ladder" like stair to the "penthouse", number 304, where I stayed. Great view and cross ventilation, thank goodness (see my comment on no a/c).
A cot, made up as one of the beds, though not uncomfortable, was odd. The only other problems were the circa 1980 tv, which couldn't receive much, and the clogged shower...but I muddled through. Many such problems with the other travelers so you should decide what you're prepared to put up with.

There is a restaurant serving, as far as I know, only breakfast. There was a good variety, though no fresh cooked items, and even worse coffee than at my first two hotels on the trip. I always puzzle over this as coffee in Italy is almost an obsession and usually very good everywhere.

The neighborhood, despite Romes universal curse of graffitti everywhere, is nice....filled with resturants and coffee shops, with mostly reasonable prices. Lots of trade organization and business offices....and hint, hint, lots of other hotels.

This is a good spot IF you dont mind a bus or subway ride to the center of the city and IF you get a very good deal on the room...and I mean VERY good deal, as in 60 Euros a night...I'd say it's above a two star, but by no means a three star. And remember the subway stops at nine p.m.

Apr 1, 2008 | Trip type: Business

I stayed at the hotel Galles for 7 nights in March 2008. I was a chaperone on a school trip of 8 students to Italy.
Since I was alone, I was in a single room. The first 6 nights I was in R4. It was a very small room, but suited my needs. A small bathroom, a twin bed, a dresser, and a tv (that I never turned on). The last night (we had left Rome in between and came back the night before our flight) I was up on the second floor, in a single room, again, but much more modern and with a REALLY nice bathroom with a tub.
We spent very little time at this hotel (since we were on an educational trip to see the sites) but our group started each morning with breakfast in the basement and it wasn't bad. They made you a cappucino upon request, and had a nice spread of pastries, cereal, meats, cheeses and breads. They had yogurt only one day which was kind of random.
The location was hard to beat, because we were very close to Stazione Termini and could take the metro or bus each morning to start at the day, and then home again.
My only complaint was that each morning, at least one of the rooms in our group did not receive their wake up call. One morning that was me. Another morning it came 1/2 an hour early.

  • Liked — location, breakfast
  • Disliked — spotty wake-up calls, my room smelled a little musty

Stayed at the hotel for three nights. Booked there by CHA travel, a student travel group that also has adult tours. We were an adult tour. None of the smoke detectors were in working condition on any of the floors that I visited. All of the smoke detectors had their "guts" removed. When we complained to the management, we were told that it was o.k. because Italy didn't have a smoke detector law. I am not sure about that, but it didn't make our stay any safer. I would not allow my child to stay there, and we would not have stayed there if we had any other option. We did not receive our hotel itinerary until shortly before the start of the tour in the U.S.. The hotel looked good on its web site. Problems from the beginning. When we checked in there were not enough singles for our group. We had a number of single adults traveling with us. We were told that CHA was aware of the problem, but simply told the hotel to book anyone with the same last name into the doubles. That didn't solve the problem. The night manager in charge on one of the nights we were there was very obviously intoxicated, and smoking as well ( remember there were no noticeable working smoke detectors). When one of our group shouted at him to put the cigarette out, he put it out on the computer keyboard. Many complained about the lack of security. Many doors were found to be open when we returned from out day tour. One of the group complained that her mini-bar had been opened and all of the contents removed. She complained to the manager that she would not pay for the contents. After some discussion , he agreed. Many were charged for phone calls thay didn't make. We didn't find out about the charges until we were ready to leave for the airport when we checked out of the rooms at 4:00 a.m.. Our tour guide, who was excellent, told us just to leave the hotel as he did not want us to miss our plane. A person who was with another group was arguing with the manager about phone calls he said he did not make. I don't know how his problem ended as we left for the airport. Phones not all in working order. Some people did not receive wake up calls. It was especially bad on the morning that we left for the airport. Message light were on, but no messages. Breakfast good. Dinner poor. Good location near the termini. Very disappointed with CHA for booking us into this hotel
