We chose Alessandrino due do its proximity to Vatican and St. Pietro railway station because we wanted to attend the Papal Audience and leave for the Civitavecchia port just after the event.
And it turned out to be the right decision.
We were satisfied with good service especially at the front desk.
Before our leave for Rome, I bombed the front desk with various questions via email and they usually replied with detailed answers within 10 min!
They ordered a limo that picked us up at the airport for only 40 euros per car (the express train from the airport to Termini would cost 24 euros).
The only problem with our stay was that local residents once enjoyed their life too loud until midnight - it has been already streesed out in other reviews.
I also have to mention that if you find a map of the area via Google or http://www.go-rome-hotels.com/hotel-alessandrino.php, it will show a metro (subway) station there additionally to the railway one. It's misleading info - there is no metro station there so if you need to go to the center of Rome, you could board a train on St. Pietro railway station that goes to Termini and get off on the second stop where you will have a free transfer to the metro (it costs 1 euro).
To summarize my review, I would recommend this hotel.

My husband and I stayed at the Alessandrino with two good friends while traveling in Italy. We tried to cancel our second night to accommodate changing plans, and the staff were completely inflexible - despite our attempt to cancel 48 hours prior. The place was fine. Breakfast was nice. The room seemed clean and the location was fine - it was really just the stubborn staff that was slightly frustrating.

Reasonably quiet, only disturbance is local residents enjoying life but ends early at night. Room size ok, we stayed in 202, view limited but ok. Hotel would be excellent it has potential.
Main gripes
Air-con was a trickle of cool air for 3mins then switched off for 30 (must be pre-set cycle) asked reception and all they could suggest was turn dial slowly, reported twice but no solution. Window shutters had to be propped open as wall fittings loose. Toilet seat not fixed and wobbled. Wi-fi was promised but you pay e10 for 3 hours and had to go to reception for signal, reported but reception insisted we should get signal in room but obviously not, reported this twice. Breakfast offered good, just wish staff did not bang dishes and throw cutlery about quite a wake up call in the morning!
If you go try bus 34 travels from Cavour to half way up hill - saves the legs!
Just wish all hotels would provide two bedside lamps and hooks etc in bathroom for one's wetbags etc. Also asked for additional lamp but it never came either.
Unfortunately Rome is known for surliness and attitude to foreigners but hospitality staff could benefit from lesson in PR.
Fridge in room was welcomed but you have to stock it yourself.

This hotel has had lots of bad press on this website and others but I personally found the hotel to be very pleasant and felt safe.
It is a bit tricky to find but once you know where it is there is a short cut to get down on to the main road which the staff will point out to you. It is literally ten minutes away from the vatican so very easy to get there and to main shops. The train station 'Roma San Pietro' is less than 5 minutes away to get train to airport etc.
Decor - little old fashioned but considering that its 3 star and the low price paid it was very reasonable and it was clean. Like many italian hotels the shower is not enclosed, it is like a wet room. Fridge in hotel room, wardrobe and safe that was bolted down to the wardrobe so felt quite safe to use. We had a double room with kingsize bed that was v. comfortable.
Breakfast is a standard affair, a few croissants, cereal, biscuits, yogurts, fruit juice. They will do you a fresh cappuccino if you ask the staff who were all pleasant.
If you want any drinks at any other time water, cola, alcohol their prices are very reasonable. We sat outside on the sun terrace on the last afternoon, very pleasant and had a drink there.
Security - felt safe at all times, came back late one evening about 1.30am and the desk was manned all through the night. If eating out and wanting to be near the hotel would recommend the Goose Pizzeria under the railway lines on opposite side of road to hotel, mainly locals eating there not too touristy and great pizza.

Overall this is very good value considering we paid £30 per person per night for bed and breakfast in a central rome location.

Hotel Alessandrino was a great value for the location. We had family room, with a king bed, twin and couch bed for 2 adults, two kids 16 & 11. The room and its furnishings were a little worn, but the house keeping made beds, picked up and refreshed the bathroom everyday of our 4 night stay. Location was very near to St. Peters, but as other reviews explain, its a 2-3 block hike uphill to the hotel. The bathroom was clean, spacious, and very new. Breakfast was a little boring, but adequate with pasteries, yogurt, fresh fruit, cereal, toast, juices, milk, hot cocoa, cappucino and tea. Area is residential, so quiet at night, front desk staff very helpful, evening staff does not speak english. Only unfortunate aspect was that hotel asked for cash payment on our last day, not sure of the reason why, but we objected (could not get enough cash from money machine) and they accepted the Master card. Check on method of payment before you check in.
