I just came back from Rome where I spent 2 nts at the River Palace, and am so glad I did. The reviews I had read previous to me booking, were dead on. The only negative at all, was the size of the standard rooms.
They're very tiny, but lovely. Then again, how much time do you spend in your room while in Rome?? I can't say enough about the staff and the service we received....I must say it was exceptional. I am a travel agent and I must confess that besides being on a cruise ship, there aren't that many hotels I've been to in the past the offered the same service ( remember this is a 4* not a 5* ). The hotel itself is quite petite ( as are most in Rome ), but very lovely, with a very cozy decor.
It's not cheap, but hotels which are dumps, sell for very little less.
The continental bkfst which is included is great considering it's continental. Good variety, great service again. The location of the hotel is perfect!!!
You step out of the front door, hang a right and just walk. You're in the main area of Rome, all the shopping is right there and you can reach the Spanish Steps, among other piazza's in no time. Great to just hang out. The variety of the restaurants nearby is great. Will definitely go back here in the future. Also, you're a 2 minute walk to the underground metro....sooo easy to use and will take you anywhere...we were at the Vatican in less than 20 minutes, including a short walk.

The River Palace Hotel is situated at the top end of town right near the Piazza del popolo, which is a lovely quiet area just outside the central Spanish steps area. The place was spotlessly clean with a great fondness for marble. The hotel isn't overly large and the rooms are small but perfectly formed. The hotel staff were lovely and the breakfasts very ample. It is an ideal quiet place to return to after the bustle of touring around Rome in the day. I would definitely return there. The bartender is a real character, very courteous and from another era.

Location is great - we walked everywhere! although there was not a great choice of restaurants in the immediate area

We did not find the street to be grim , maybe a little lacking in character. Nice hotel though rooms were on the small side. Not made for lounging around in.

The bathroom was very clean and a good size. Breakfast was nice with great capuccinos and cakes. We got a good rate as we travelled in July and I think it was good value.

The River Palace is a lovely 4 star hotel in Rome very near Piazza del Popolo. The property was renovated just a few years ago and the rooms and bathrooms are beautiful. Marble in the bathrooms and the ceiling in the bedroom was painted like the sky. The rooms are smallish by US standards so I would suggest that you opt for the superior room upgrade.
The staff is very friendly and helpful.

This was our first trip to Italy and we stayed 9 days - although the room was small by US standards, we have nothing but great things to say about the hotel and staff. The adjoining restroom (shower only, no tub, tho) was more than adequate, and the small room seemed inconsequential as we used it only to sleep and freshen up before our next daily adventure out in the town. We looked all over the city (including the Via Veneto hotels) and could not have found a more perfect, centrally located hotel for seeing the sights. Located just north of Piazza Poppolo, the streets then radiate from that Plaza thru all the locations in central/old Rome; if we wanted, a taxi stand is located at the south end of that plaza plus a bunch of cafes. Many nights (esp weekends) we took a short walking trip to the Spanish Steps - but all the wonderful shops were located just south of Plaza Poppolo and the hotel - these shops and cafes were much more diverse and interesting than those we saw on Via Veneto. The hotel has a complimentary breakfast each day from 0700-1000 hrs that really was a great help to us. The staff were all outstanding and very, very helpful - and there is an ATM/bank right next door. We booked a couple of day trips using the staff. Our room was on the 7th floor. Previous comments regarding the small lift are accurate - very small - but not much different than we found in Paris. All in all, we really enjoyed finding this hotel and we will stay there again when we come back - and we say that after looking at alot of other hotels when we out and about in the city.
