Rome is an expensive city, not to mention dirty and smelly (what a shame!!!). If you stay in the city centre, be sure you're paying an arm and a leg for it eventhough your accomodation is only a basic 3 star hotel. Our hotel, hotel Milani is only a block away from the train station, so it's easy enough for us to walk.
We kept our un-used suitcase at the airport, they called it: left lugage (6 euro/day) and took the Leonardo express train from Fiumicio airport to the Termini Station in the central of Rome. We were rather impressed with the state of both (inside) the train and the station - at least they are clean(ish), yeah i know. 11 euro/person for the train ticket and it took about half an hour.
Passed the bumpy and smelly roads, we arrived at the hotel. It was rather nice. The staff're friendly and the lady who checked us in spoke very slow english - clearly she's trying to remember all the words in english (while talking to us). The lift worked well and clean and the marble staircase opposite the lift was so shiny -they love marble here in italy. The room itself was average. it was a very basic large room with a wardrobe, a (unfortunately) hard bed and a (thank god) good shower. TV is available in the room with most channels in Italian :)
Breakfast's on the ground floor and it was ok with a fab Italian coffee.
As I have said, it was all very basic and average and it cost us AUD666 for 3 nights 4 days, so if you can find somewhere else better and very central... let us know!
