I booked this before reading the reviews, then I read them and thought OMG!! what have I done? However we were pleasantly surprised. It was a reasonable price compared to city centre hotel prices, beware Brits, Rome is very expensive (more later) Getting there from the City Centre is easy, metro's every 2 or 3 minutes to Tiburtini which takes 10 minutes max, then a 20 minute bus ride, buses every 15 minutes. This did not bother us as I used to have a 40 minute bus ride every day to work so I noticed nothing different and after 3 days we were totally used to the travelling. I think they have cleaned up the area as there were no hookers and pickpockets whatsoever in evidence, again if you have been near certain parts of Tyneside, the outskirts of Rome are like the Cotswolds in comparison. so travelling to and from the hotel was nothing different to travelling in any city suburb and even better there is a shuttle bus from the hotel to the metro every day at various times.. The receptionists at the hotel were incredibly helpful, the barman a great bloke and drinks at the bar were half the price of drinks in Rome centre which saved us quite alot. The restaurant was quite good but we only went once as they did'nt do pizzas! but it was nice enough. There is also free wi fi and a free computer with internet access at the hotel which was ideal for keeping tabs on my ebay and emails and again saved us a packet not having to use internet cafes. Rooms were clean and fine for the job, breakfast was traditional Italian (basic) nice bread and butter but then lots of jam etc and sweet croisants, cereals but no cheese, ham, eggs etc. So there you are nowhere near as bad as it sounds, clean, cheap drinks and great value.
Rome is fantastic no doubt about it but very expensive, 6 quid a pint, 5 quid a glass of wine in any bar whether scruffy backstreet or prime position in a piazza. Only good value food at night is pizza, pasta seem cheap but you don't get much as it is a prima platte (starter), ministrone soup 6 or 7 quid a bowl, bruschetta 3 quid, (a thin piece of toast with chopped tomato and a pinch of oregano on it) But at lunchtime there are loads of offers, best we found was El Borracho near Campo di Fiori, fochetta's or Pannini's with any filling plus a beer for 3 quid. Best pizzas we found were at 'Wanted' and ' Vechia Roma' both on Via Leonina in the Cavour area where there are loads of other places also at half reasonable prices.
I'm on a roll now, book online for the Vatican museums or face a 2 hour queqe, go to the Forum first and get a combined ticket for the Forum and Collaseum otherwise a 2 hour queque at the Colluseum and if you still have a teacher union card or GTC card take it and you will get 3 euros off. Most arty places you have to pay for which is a bit of a culture shock for those of us used to free London Museums. Thats it, have fun.

Hi to all who intend to stay at the Romulus,

I agree with all the above comments regarding this Hotel. We could have kicked ourselves for not looking at this web page before going to Rome. The Hotel was miles away from the centre and the journey into the centre took forever between dodging traffic and prostitutes. Service was diabolical as we ate in the restuarant on one occassion and all our dishes arrive at the table at the same time. The Hotel also claimed to have luxurious gardens and when we requested to use the garden we were refused and the receptionist would not explain why.

But the main comment I have is to be very careful on the metro as I was pickpocketed just as I was boarding the train. I am convinced that there was one accomplice in front of me and this held me up for a few seconds while the other stole the money that was in my back pocket.

Management response from Hotel_Romulus_Rome, Dott Stefano Tiribocchi Marketing Manager

Dear Madame and Sir, we would like to thank you for the review left. We are pleased in reading suggestions and find the way to improve our standards and learn how to satisfy our Guests. I want to tell to you and to all future guests that since you wrote your comment on the September 11 2006, many things changed. First of all, the street that brings you from our hotel to the city centre (6 kilometres distance) is now clean and secure, due to a recent Regional Law versus prostitution, now it is illegal and the ancient Salaria Street is quiet. Second, the traffic, you know, Rome is a big city and in some hours there is a lot of traffic, in some others it is less, it depends. The restaurant service changed many time, and now we are proud to say to all of our Guests that we have a very high service restaurant with a very good chef, to taste italian traditional dishes. Lastly, the garden, it is now open for our guests and you can have a beer or relax in it. I hope you want to return to our hotel, now that the wind changed it to a better service with a very good value.
Kidnest Regards,
Dott Stefano Tiribocchi - Hotel Romulus Marketing Manager - Rome 31st of December 2008

we have just returned from 4 days as sight seeing tourists. If you are like us DO NOT STAY THERE. it is a contractors/worker hotel for employees who are sent to Rome to carry out tasks. In this respect it is ok notwithstanding a dire dining room and staff. (Mrs Overall <Acorn Antiques> is alive and well and working here!) As a tourist hotel it is useless. 10k and a bus+metro ride from Rome. You will also run the gauntlet of prostitutes and their tools of the trade! on the flyover from the bus stop. Rooms and rception staff were fine and the hotel is well appointed. But do not trust the dining room - you have been warned.

I agree with the previous review. There is a bus stop down the road into the bus terminal, but you have to stand on the main road which is well risky as the traffic just flies past, the bus takes you about an hour, then from that bus terminal a train into the centre which is another half hour into the main termini. This hotel is miles away from the centre of Rome. And there are prostitutes plying their trade just down from the hotel every evening. Breakfast is a dry bun and dinner is a very small menu. At dinner i was the only girl in the restaurant which is a bit disconcerting. I generally get the feeling that this hotel is a "gentlemens" hotel. The ice machine was broken also. Considering this place is supposed to be 3* i was dissapointed, the pink padded walls in the room were really outdated, the bedroom furniture had no handles on it either. The only thing i will say is that it is really clean. This hotel needs to get a shuttle bus big time - never again, thinking i was saving on a cheaper hotel, i made up for it in transport - pants!

We arrived in Rome in March of this year for a 3 night stay. One piece of advice-- Read the guidebooks before visiting Rome - it's all true, the good, the bad & the ugly. (Especially watch the hours of the major attractions - see everything before 3 pm, that's when everything seemed to close). And speaking of ugly, let's talk about Hotel Romulus. Their motto seemed to be "es impossibly". The hotel is deceptively far from the city & is situated along a very busy major road. We arrived at 3:30 in the afternoon & after checking in, we asked about perhaps getting some food - "es impossibly". The restaurant was closed for lunch & wouldn't open again till 7:30. This was fine as it is normal for Rome. However, There are no other eateries within walking distance. In fact, the only thing within walking distance were the hookers. There was a large group of them plying their trade just down the street. However, at times it seemed they were the only friendly people in Rome! So, as there was no food to be found in the area, we asked about perhaps having something delivered. Even though there were places in the area who would deliver, "es impossibly". The girl at the front desk wasn't allowed to give us the number. No food was allowed in the rooms, in the lobby, not even in the parking lot! She wouldn't even give us the number so we could have it delivered to the parking lot next door (perhaps the hookers would have gone in halfsies with us?). So, we called a cab (on the one day the cabs weren't on strike) and had to spend 20 euros roundtrip to eat at... McDonalds! When we did try to eat in the Hotel restaurant, it took (and I am not kidding) 2 1/2 hours to order, receive, consume & pay for a single plate of pasta. The room itself looked like something out of a seedy Barbie dream house. However, although you couldn't eat in the room, you could smoke-- as was evident by the 50+ burn holes in the blankets (the maid smoked constantly while changing the sheets, so that may be part of the reason for that). At breakfast, they were very serious about it ending at 9:30. Guests were fighting each other off for stale bread & glazed croissants. When more croissants were requested the answer was the ever present "es impossibly". Please take this review to heart. Do not stay at this hotel. If possible, stay closer to the city - it will save you $$ in the long run. The buses you want never run & the subways are crowded (the American girl in front of us on the subway was pick-pursed by 2 young girls - watch your belongings closely!!). Good luck! Hopefully your vacation will turn out better than ours!
