“No One Goes for the Hill Itself”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

Just what does Aventine Hill mean? I didn't find the walk up to Santa Sabina and the keyhole view of St. Peter's dome worth overcoming the steepness of the road from Piazzale Ugo la Malfa (from which you can look down on the nothingness of the Cicus Maximus if you feel that you have to see that). On the other hand, if Testaccio is part of the Aventine and you taught English for a living, you will definitely take the subway to Piramide for the grave of he whose name was writ in water in the Non-Catholic Cemetery, and take a gander at the pyramid and old Roman gate there, and perhaps stoll a bit for a look at Monte Testaccio, the hill made from fragments of earthenware jars.

“My favourite view of Rome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2013

The Aventine is a love at first sight! - and at second and third walk! Do not miss the vista at the top - Santa Sabina's garden park - to be enchanted with Rome-by-night sights!

“A peaceful retreat”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

A nice stroll up on the Aventine hill to get away from the hustle of the city. The keyhole view was a bit overrated, and was not worth waiting in a long queue in bright sunshine.

“Wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2013

Aventine Hill is really serene and picturesque so if you want to take some breathtaking photos do come here.
Also the famous "keyhole" is on Aventine Hill - well worth it to come take a look and a lot of fun trying to get that perfect keyhole picture :)

“Great views of the city and the river”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2013

It's just a beautiful place to walk around and relax after a day of touring. Probably the best time to see it is any time around sunset. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours to walk through the garden of orange trees, as well as soak in the breathtaking views of the city. Spend some time in the ancient church of Santa Sabina to see the sunlight (or moonlight) illuminate the nave of the church from the selenite windows. These windows have a very unique design (like no other in Rome). Also, the church door made out of Cypress is one of the oldest wooden doors from Ancient Rome. Each door panel tells a story from the crucifixion. It's amazing that it has survived all these years.

No visit to Aventine Hill is complete without a stop at the Piazza Cavalieri di Malta. That peak through the keyhole was amazing! There may be a line, but there wasn't one when we visited. I took a picture from the keyhole, but it came out blurry. Thank goodness for TA! I was so impressed with the pictures that I've seen of the view from the keyhole. It makes me want to go back and try it again.
