I am writing this review as a non religious person.
Piazza san Pietro is stunning! Here you will find the opportunity to see the Swiss guard (very dandy), you can buy your post cards and stamps and send them through the vaticans postal service (take a pen, they charge 1 euro to buy one).
This is where you will find the entrance to Basillica di San Pietro. We arrived on a friday (June 09) at about 11am and the queues were horrific. So bad that we decided that we would not go in. We went and wrote our post cards and came out to find that in fact the queue had significantly reduced and was moving fairly well. I think it is luck of the draw with the coach parties and worth waiting.
The Basillica is wonderful (even as a non religious person) though I did feel that it wasn't really being respected by the visitors as a holy place, but I suppose this will always be the case where many visitors are present particularly with tour guides speaking loadly. Entrance is free.
We chose to visit the Dome. To walk all the way 520 (approx) steps it is 5 euros, to catch the lift 320 steps it is 7 euros. For anyone with average fitness this will not be a problem as once you get towards the top progress is slow due to other people. If you are a large person or don't like small places you may well feel uncomfortable as you get higher as it gets very narrow and snug.
The lift takes you to the base of the dome where you will get a great view, so if you don't think you can make it to the top take this option.
The top of the dome is quite busy but gives panoramic views of Rome and is without doubt a wonderful experience.
The museums including the sistine chappel are a short walk to the right of the square. I had visited before, my husband only wanted to see the sistine chappel. Entrance was 14 euros per person, so we decided to give it a miss. There were no queues here at around 1pm.
A wonderful place to visit, a must for any visitor to Rome.

Go there on a Sunday and try to be in St. Peter's Square at 12 when the Pope makes his weekly appearance... The experience is truely electrifying!

The Vatican Museum is well worth the queue, and be prepared to queue! On the last Sunday of the month the Vatican museum is free to visitors so expect a bigger queue, but it is definately worth it, even if you rush through and just look at the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, this would be enough to justify the queue.

An amazing place steeped in history and the most amazing art and architecture all under one roof - the centre of the Catholic and Christian world with amazing roof top views of Rome and the under belly is equally astounding with the sleeping place of many previous Popes including John Paul II.
A day could easily be spent here if you include a visit to Sistine Chapel in Vatican Museum.
Don't miss!!!!!!!

We went to Rome for 6 days in early April. We picked up the free tickets for the Wednesday Papal audience from the Bishops' Office for United States Visitors to the Vatican which was located near the Trevi Fountain. Web site: http://www.pnac.org/general/visiting_vatican.htm#contact

We ordered the tickets on line and got a response the next day. Since after April 1, the audience is held in St. Peter's Square, I believe there is never any problem getting a ticket for the event. There were many many thousands of folding chairs set up for the masses of people in the square.

We got to St. Peter's square at about 9:30 for the 10:30 audience and got a good seat. Even those with worse seats had a good view, since there are 2 huge jumbotron TV screens set up for viewing the event.
The audience begins with the Pope being driven in his pope-mobile down and across the cordoned off lanes in the midst of the audience area, so almost everyone gets a good view of the Pope. Once the Pope gets to the covered area at the top of the steps, there is a short welcoming speech by one many priests/bishops/cardinals on the stand with the Pope and lots of individual groups in attendance were mentioned to the delight of those people. The Pope then read a lenghty document in Italian. This was followed by another priest reading another list of groups in attendance. At this point (probably 11:30), we decided to leave the audience along with quite a number of other people. I hope you do not go to hell for walking out on the pope, but by doing so, we were able to walk (15 minutes away) immediately into the Vatican museum. We then had lunch inside the museum also with no waiting.

So, my suggestion for seeing the Vatican Museum is to arrive about noon on Wednesdays, the day the Pope has his audience. Note, that I did walk to the entrance of the museum before the audience began to see if I could pre-buy our tickets for the museum and was denied. Once you buy the tickets, you must enter the museum.
