I am writing this review as a non religious person.
Piazza san Pietro is stunning! Here you will find the opportunity to see the Swiss guard (very dandy), you can buy your post cards and stamps and send them through the vaticans postal service (take a pen, they charge 1 euro to buy one).
This is where you will find the entrance to Basillica di San Pietro. We arrived on a friday (June 09) at about 11am and the queues were horrific. So bad that we decided that we would not go in. We went and wrote our post cards and came out to find that in fact the queue had significantly reduced and was moving fairly well. I think it is luck of the draw with the coach parties and worth waiting.
The Basillica is wonderful (even as a non religious person) though I did feel that it wasn't really being respected by the visitors as a holy place, but I suppose this will always be the case where many visitors are present particularly with tour guides speaking loadly. Entrance is free.
We chose to visit the Dome. To walk all the way 520 (approx) steps it is 5 euros, to catch the lift 320 steps it is 7 euros. For anyone with average fitness this will not be a problem as once you get towards the top progress is slow due to other people. If you are a large person or don't like small places you may well feel uncomfortable as you get higher as it gets very narrow and snug.
The lift takes you to the base of the dome where you will get a great view, so if you don't think you can make it to the top take this option.
The top of the dome is quite busy but gives panoramic views of Rome and is without doubt a wonderful experience.
The museums including the sistine chappel are a short walk to the right of the square. I had visited before, my husband only wanted to see the sistine chappel. Entrance was 14 euros per person, so we decided to give it a miss. There were no queues here at around 1pm.
A wonderful place to visit, a must for any visitor to Rome.
