“Gorgeous church, don't let the outside fool you”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2014 NEW

Similar to many churches in Rome the outside of Santa Maria in Trastevere is unpretentious, but the second you walk through the doors you know you have entered a very special place. My husband and I happened to stumble across this church during high mass on a Sunday morning. We ended up staying for the entire mass and it turned out to be one of our most memorable experiences in Rome. The mass was in both italian and latin and we were one of the few tourists there. After mass we wandered out into the piazza where the locals were socializing and watching street performers..really great experience.

“Worth the Effort Just to see the Mosaics”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2014 NEW

On a recent trip to Rome my wife and I had a list of over 10 churches we wanted to visit. Santa Maria in Trastevere was one of the first we saw. On the day we visited we had started at Campo dei Fiori, then walked to Piazza Navona, then to the Pantheon, followed by a longer walk to the Jewish Synagogue, then over a nearby bridge into the Trastevere area of Rome. It was a very pleasant October day. We strolled through what seemed like a maze of streets and alleys to finally end up at this church. The piazza and fountain in front were a indication we had arrived. The non-descript character of the front and entrance to the church give no indication of the vast beauty inside. The mosaics are some of the best you'll see. I loved the floor with its intricate designs and attractive color schemes. After you finish your visit to the church, I recommend you walk along the street just to the side of the church to find some unique shopping and a variety of restaurants. We had a nice meal only a few hundred meters from the church entrance. To find this street, just go out into the square, face the church, then bear to your right and follow that street - it runs in a northwesterly direction.

“atmospheric with a real sense of its 2nd century foundations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2014 NEW

The mosaics in the entrance illustrate the great age of this amazing church. With a decorated ceiling and with Romanesque windows and arches one can easily feel the history of the floor plan which dates back to 340AD.....so cool! As with most churches in Rome you are expected to respect the space and have covered shoulders and legs. The high platform is able to be illuminated by putting a small sum in to the timed light controller on the left hand side stairs. If you are lucky enough to be staying in this historic area of narrow streets and piazzas, this church is well worth a visit.

“Nip In and Be Wowed if You Are in the Neighborhood”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2014

With all the supremely ornate, over-the-top, overcrowded cathedrals in Rome, it's always a pleasure and a surprise to stumble on a place of worship that actually feels spiritual. I actually liked this church more than most others. No crowds. Absolutely gorgeous art. We lingered and lingered.

“Roman church...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2014

Always beautiful to see a Roman church! This one is in the middle of the Trastevere area, so a perfect break from all the restaurants, bars and shops. Worth a quick look at the artwork and architecture, all Roman churches are though!
