I can't say enough BAD things. We thought the room was a little dingy at first - dinged up furniture, stains on carpet, uncomfertable bed, but were willing to deal. Soon we realized the air conditioning didn't work and the person at the front desk refused to help. But still we were willing to deal. But the final straw was when I got in the shower the next morning and realized that the black bathroom tile was actually COVERED in mold and the brush of my hand sent all sorts of black mold off the wall. Next i looked up and could see cob webs in the corner of the shower. We moved out of the room an hour later. I have never written a bad review of a hotel before but this was needed. I'll deal with a lot, but not filthy rooms. I don't understand all the positive postings. The lobby was nice and they did have an okay roof top bar that was about all that was good. The neighborhood was also dirty and loud. This is the type of hotel I would expect for $50 a night in Eastern Europe.

Management response from Daniele-HSF, proprietario
(Management representative)

Dear Guest,
I am so sorry for your bad experience at HSF.
Airconditioning is now working again (it was not broken, just a switch to be pushed up). Also all bathrooms have been deeply cleaned.
Nobody is happy to receive such a bad review but we will use it to prevent future guests could find the same problems.

Kind Regards,

- Daniele

We selected this hotel base on a combination of Trip Advisor High Rating and Confirming information in Pauline Frommers Italy. Since this is the only time my wife and I have been to Europe, we can not compare the size of the Rooms. From reading many comments about other Hotels, I would say that the rooms are small but adequate for travelers ( We had space for our suitcases and a warddrobe). Our linen was changed each day ( double Mattresses and PIlows), the bathrooms ( showers, not tub, recently remodeled) and towels ( bathsheets) were cleaned ( very tidy and met my wife'r high expectations). There was a good hair Dryer and soap, shampoo, shower cap and shoe polishing pad ( which were renewed each day). We had a full breakfast bar every morning ( bacon and eggs, yogurt, cereal, fruits, granola, Strong Coffee ( according to my wife who is a Starbucks-Bold Fan) Expresso or Capacino and assorted Teas. Each Morning we left the Hotel very well fed .
The hotel is a block and half away from "major bus and tram" locations as well as two blocks and a half from "the actions" in Trestavere Eating areas.
We found the staff to be extremely cooperative, any time of day. There was internet access availble in a room next to the Reception Desk. If we ever had the opportunity to go to Rome again, we would definitely stay there againd.

We stayed here for three nights in February. The hotel is in an excellent location - within easy walking distance of restaurants and all the main attractions. Breakfast was included in the price and was OK but nothing wonderful. Our room (306) was small and too dark to read in comfortably and impossible to see in clearly to put on make up in the evening! The wallpaper was also peeling from some of the walls and the room had clearly seen better days. The wiring in the bathroom was interesting! The room was fairly quiet and there was not a lot of noise from traffic. Service was patchy. There was a very good young receptionist and an indifferent older one who, amongst other things, forgot to book our return taxi to the airport. Some of the staff who served at breakfast did not seem to understand any of the languages on offer from the guests, including Italian!

We recently stayed for two nights at the San Francesco. It's in a great (funky) Greenwich-Village type neighborhood loaded with terrific restaurants and local flavor. We loved the hotel - very clean, comfortable and a great spot. We had only two days and we were able to walk (a couple of miles) to the Vatican one day and the other day walked to the Coliseum, Forum and Palatine Hill. If you don't mind walking on those ancient cobblestone streets its a level walk, although you might find it a bit far to the Vatican, especially walking back! The breakfast at the hotel was lavish by any standard. And, free computer access in the lobby was very helpful. Overall, we'd highly recommend it.
Rooms on the back of the hotel open to a convent garden, which I would expect would be quite a bit quieter with the windows open. We were on the fourth floor and had quite a bit of traffic noise when the windows were open, but you're in a city, so what do you expect!?

Excellent, helpful staff.....the breakfast is lovely with many food item choices. The rooms are very clean. I especially thought the bathrooms were nice, clean, and larger than most. Great location to all the major sites.
