Wow - it's amazing to step out of the hotel & see the Colosseum every morning. Yyou must start your day on the 5th floor terrace and enjoy the best-stocked "breakfast-bar" we've experienced in Europe- a nice selection of meats, cheeses, fruits and juices - try the A-C-E, its very refreshing. Also, there is a fantastic selection of cappucino & other coffees available gratis.
The rooms are modest by American standards, but are as clean and tidy as any great hotel in the US. Our room had a safe, but it was not listed online. A couple of oddities at this property include an unusual bidet-type aparatus that does not spray upwards, around the bowl, and more importantly bath towels that seem more like table cloths than actual towels (see photos).
Most of the staff speaks BASIC English, but don't expect them to be able to give detailed suggestions.
As for eating locally, we highly recommend Bottega Cafe, which is about 2 blocks toward the Colossem, behind the fountain - it's always busy and always good.
Overall, a great place to stay - we would stay there again.

location is apollo's best asset, it was a 5 min walk to the colliseum, 15 min to trevi fountain, 10 min to closest metro(the local A or B train cost is 1 euro, get ticket at machine), 15 min to termini station. small family run establishment is friendly, no real public areas except rooftop available breakfast only. my single room for over $100/nt was very small cell with a sagging mattress, when i booked the double for a few euro more was not available but a better size. did not like the recommended hotel/restaurant on via maggio and was overcharged. walk another 10 minutes to trevi and enjoy better quality and prices at "piccolo buco" on via del lavatore... great house red, wood oven pizza, handmade pasta...yum. enjoyed the pantheon, vatican(if you don't have tickets go early morning, colliseum, fountains, ruins, piazzas, and shopping.
from fiumicino airport to termini train station rome is 11 euro on the leonardo da vinci train and efficient...if returning to the usa you will go from train to T5 signs by walking to curb pickup for small bus at "T5" sign, and be shuttled to T5 for luggage(bags are also weighed) and flight checkin, then security screening, after this you are shuttled to terminal for departure. although i was told to plan 3 hrs, surprisingly it took less than 1 hr to be processed and arrive at terminal for departure on continental (wednesday late morning april 1st); spent the extra time shopping duty free and a quick meal...but you can get a chair massage for a price!

Out of the four hotels we visited in Italy, the Apollo Hotel was our least favorite. It was the most expensive and the smallest. The owners have taken great care in furnishing and decorating the rooms, and despite it's small size (the rooms, the hallways, the elevator), it's very clean and polished. The room was dark (the one window let in very little natural light). The hotel appeared to be familly-run, and we also experienced the pushiness of the staff. You have to leave your room key at the front desk whenever you exit the hotel which required interaction with the staff. We found an amazing restaurant within a block of the hotel called La Carbonara. Although we showed up right at 7:00 pm when they opened, they only had one table left, so I would suggest making reservations. It was one of the many small quality restaurants in Italy where you can eat plenty for dinner (with wine) for less than $50 for two. And we never found a restaurant in Italy that wasn't perfectly happy to let us share a serving of food. The worst part about the Apollo Hotel was the location. Although it was fairly convenient to the metro (the best way to get around the city), the neighborhood seemed seedy and run-down. The streets were very crowded and many were under repair, and there seemed to be several local gatherings of men blocking the sidewalks. We also stayed in a hotel by the Barberini fountain and metro stop, and the location was very different. It felt quaint and friendly compared to this hotel. As for the walk to the Termini, it all depends on time of day. If you are walking there early in the morning, it is a breeze. If you are trying to get there in the late afternoon, you will have a much harder time trying to negotiate the sidewalks and getting across the ever-busy streets. I don't think you will regret staying in this hotel, but there are better ones out there. And although they provided computer access, you had to pay for it.

I chose the hotel for its proximity to the Coliseum, as we were only staying for a few days and wanted to see as much as possible, The family who own the hotel were lovely and the room clean and comfortable. Its a perfect base for seeing the city, all the sites apart from the Vatican/Castel St. Angelo, which are only 5 stops away on the Metro. Breakfast was fantastic on the roof terrace as well.
Would recommend the hotel to anyone

5 of us in 2x2 plus 1 rooms. We were on 4th floor overlooking street. It's a fairly quiet street especially at night. Room was OK. Modern. A little small & dark perhaps, but clean. Breakfast was good quality continental on roof terrace (up a flight of stairs).
Location good. Possible to walk to Termini (main station) with backp[ack but no more. Colisseum is about 600 m away. Could see it from window if I stuck my head out. Spanish steps etc rather further but within walking distance. Need to use underground or open top tour bus for Vatican.
Main critcism is that there is a very small reception area and no real 'bar'. Just a room adjacent to reception. no pool or anything else..too city centre..
Staff were friendly and spoke enough English to get by.
Proprietor recommended local restaurant run by grandson of Enrico Fermi with pictures of him around the wall..makes a change from footballers (look him up you physicians !) , v nice but a bit expensive.

  • Liked — position Quiet
  • Disliked — Small rooms. Lack of lounge
