This hotel is near the Vatican on the west side of the river. There are almost no shops or restaurants nearby and there is no Metro station either so be prepared for lots of walking. That said, the hotel is fine. Our room was small by US standards but typical European. Small city hotels are sometimes noisy but we had no problem and slept really well. The staff seemed a bit uncommunicative at first, but were actaully quite friendly when we got to know them. Breakfast is typical continental cold buffet. The hotel is in a very narrow street set back from the main road running along the side of the river and the taxi driver dumped us down at the main road and pointed us in the direction of a small (dirty) alleyway where there is a direction sign for La Rovere. Do not let him do that - insist on being taken to the front of the hotel. The Travestere district is excellent for the evening meal (its like the Latin Quarter in Paris only better). Just walk south along the river for about 15 mins. You have to walk along the side of the river to get pretty much anywhere so during the day it's nice to use the steps down to the lower embankment and get away from the traffic. You can get back up to street level at any bridge. For a great half day out take the train from the station near the Pyramid (30 mins walk) to the ruined port city of Ostia Antica, it's great.

The hotel is generally fine, quiet etc., but the radiator in our bathroom didn't work for our entire stay (and Rome in Jan is cold!). Each time we mentioned it we were told someone would look at it "tomorrow". We were not offered another room, and on the final evening (when neither the main room radiator nor the bathroom radiator were working) the desk staff were extremely rude, saying they were warm enough, there was nothing they could do. Additionally, we asked for a taxi back to Ciampino airport (which had cost E46 on our trip into Rome). We were taken by someone who was not a taxi and who charged us E60. We would not return to this hotel, or recommend it.

The location was perfect for visiting the Vatican, though the small crumbling alley that led to the hotel might make one nervous upon returning to the hotel at night. Our accomodations were quite adequate but the room was dark and the decor not very attractive. The bathroom was modern and kept very clean though and we were provided with plenty of towels. The breakfast which was included was fine and available in a very nice dining room. The staff were courteous and it was very pleasant to have our coffee and tea served to us in the morning. Overall I would have to say that given the expense of accomodations in Rome, this hotel was fine but not exceptional.

Just back from a six day break in Rome. The hotel Rovere we found was in a good location. Round the corner from the Vatican (5 mins) Piazza Navona (10 mins) don't buy a drink from the bars on Pza Navona nearly died. Roem is very walkable the only place we caught a bus to was the Catacombs. Anyway back to the Hotel. The staff were very courteous, some spoken English. The room was adequate, afterall you don't spend a lot of time in there. We had the standard double. Bed was a little hard and was 2 singles pushed together. T.V. is all Italian only english channel is CNN. Bathroom was large. Wife was disappointed because it only had a shower and not a bath!! Safety deposit box in the room was free which was a good thing. View from our room was not good (other houses) but you expect this in Rome. Found that there was no ventilation in the room so sometimes stuffy. Too many mosquitos to have the window open at night as we found out. Breakfast was adquate. rolls, croissants preserves, boiled eggs done at 7.00 so cold by 9.30! cold meat, cake so good choice.
Get the younger guy to make your cappuccino, his is the best. Try not to ask the hotel to arrange taxi transfers. From Ciampino Airport we got a taxi to the hotel and it cost us 40 euros (price negotiated before we got in).
The hotel arranged a taxi for us to the airport and it cost 60 euros!! Restaurant round the Corner Sor'ema is good. Taverna Guilia across the bridge and a little further is rubbish. Try Anticca Trattoria Polese. Across the bridge keep walking past the bus station past a church set back on your right you will come to a small square it is along the back of the square. We ate here 3 times and were never disappointed. On the way to this restaurant there is a supermarket so get your water and snacks from here. Would I stay at the Hotel Rovere again Yes. Its not cheap but neither is Rome.
