“Charming Hotel in a Quaint and Lovely Part of the City”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2010

An exceedingly charming hotel, set in the cobbled alleys of Trastevere offers warm, friendly service and comfortable clean rooms, all set around a small courtyard full of orange trees. The first night we stayed in the Junior Suite as there were no triple rooms available, We then moved to the triple room which was spacious and equally comfortable. The complimentary breakfast was large, consisting of eggs, cheese, cold meats, cereals, juices, fresh fruit, breads, pastries and pies and excellent espresso coffee or any other hot drink you wanted- more than enough to fortify you for a long day of sight seeing! The happy hour had a small selection of tasty bites and a good selection of wines.
Trastevere has a large number of very reasonably priced, good bars and restaurants which are frequented by locals. All these are within very easy walking distance from the hotel. We found a small gelataria about 5 minutes from the hotel where we had the best dark chocolate gelato that we tasted anywhere in Italy.
The hotel is close to bus stops and tram stops making it easy to get to all the sites in Rome. One thing you should however bear in mind. The alleys of Trastevere are very narrow and difficult to navigate in a big car especially on a Friday or Saturday night. There are so many cars parked all over making it impossible to drive through, unless you are familiar with the place. This made it very difficult for us to get to the hotel on Friday night when we arrived from Tuscany. We had to stop the car a fair distance away and wheel our baggage down the streets to the hotel. Our rental car driver, who was from Rome also had some trouble finding the place on another occasion. Good instructions and map on the website would certainly help in this respect.
The first bit of inconvenience not withstanding we had a lovely stay at the hotel. The final really touching gesture was the beautiful book on Rome that they gifted us just as we were leaving.
Thank you all of you at the hotel for everything that you did to make our stay comfortable. We take back beautiful memories of a lovely week in Rome- a holiday of a lifetime, a real dream come true!

This was the first stop for my wife and I on a 7 day trip through Italy, our first time in the country. All in all, we were happy with the hotel and had a pleasant stay but at the end of the day we weren't sure if it was good value. But keep in mind, we have no frame of reference for how much rooms cost in Rome. Some more detail:

GOODS:
- the room and property were very quiet so this was appreciated. Since it's near the church there were some bells ringing throughout the day (and night I think) but it was fine.
- the location was good in that it was away from the hustle and bustle of city center but we were able to walk there in 15 min. A good compromise for us.
- the staff was helpful and nice
- the umbrellas they lent out were helpful during the rainy days
- 10% discount on rooms if paid in cash
- wifi included with the room, always appreciated
- proximity to a great restaurant, Le Mani in Pasta (see our separate review)
- evening snacks: nice spread of snacks during the evenings, with the ability to purchase drinks in the lounge
- the grounds were clean and well-kept

BADS:
- room was definitely smallish. Well, to be fair our room had a room to the left with a "queen" size bed and a separate bedroom to the right with a twin bed. The two rooms are separated by the bathroom. Since it was just two of us traveling, we didn't use the 2nd bedroom at all. So the part of the room that we did use seemed small for our purposes.
- the queen bed was two beds put together. I know this is done sometimes outside of the US, just keep this in mind.
- breakfast was fine, but there were some flies hanging around the food here and there.
- price: again, it wasn't too bad, we paid ~ 145 euros per night, just seemed a tad high. I suppose for parties able to take fuller advantage of the 2nd room with the twin bed, it's a better deal

Again, we enjoyed our stay and would consider staying here again...

Great location for visiting Rome.Located in Trastevere this hotel offers clean rooms which are reasonable priced for Rome.We stayed in a double room and we were very happy. The breakfast is good but off course in Trastevere there are a lot of restaurants or pizzerias.About 10-15 minutes to Vatican city also close to Isola Tiberina.Would stay there again.

We went for the book direct, get-a-discount rate and were overwhelmed by the perfect location, friendly staff, reasonable bar prices, cleanliness of rooms and pleasant vibe of the place. We will be back.

Our stay at Santa Maria was generally pleasant and comfortable. Although we had booked a standard double room, we were in a family room with a loft, which felt rather barn like for two of us and if the weather had not been fairly warm, it could have been a cold room and bathroom. The decor was a little drab. The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was quite good, selection of cereal, cakes, meats, fruit, cheese and fruit juice, and good hot drinks with waiter service, even offered refills. Good location.

We cannot say enough about Hotel Santa Maria, in particular, the amazing staff. They were eager to make recommendations, all of which exceeded our expectations. We loved having appetizers in the evening (complimentary) while chatting with other travelers. The staff was also very knowledgeable in the wine served and how it paired with various foods. The hotel proved to be a great starting place for a number of tourist destinations or simply wandering the local streets of Trastevere. A definite must!

The staff at Hotel Santa Marie were friendly, courteous, and extremely helpful. They made great recommendations for restaurants, helped us book museum trips, and had fantastic advice for sight-seeing off the beaten path. The room itself was bright and clean, the complimentary breakfast and happy hour in the hotel's courtyard were relaxing and enjoyable. The hotel's location is excellent, as the neighborhood of Trastevere is at once old world and trendy, offering lots of fantastic restaurants and unique shops nestled among the tangle of narrow cobblestone streets. Getting around is easy, it’s a few short blocks to multiple bus stops and walking distance to most of Rome’s main tourist sites. That said, getting a cab driver from the Termini station to take us to Trastevere was momentarily difficult. So just be prepared to ask a couple of drivers if it’s rush hour, or take a bus. Hotel Santa Maria was a real gem, I'd definitely recommend it. If you go, trattoria Da Augusto around the corner is worth a try!
