“happy to be here again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2010

Small boutique hotel ---This was our second time at this hotel. Rooms are all on the ground level surrounding a courtyard with orange trees. Breakfast has an assortment of cheese, meat, eggs, pastries, cereal, juices and coffee. You can eat in the courtyard in good weather. You can also enjoy a glass of wine in the early evening--so relaxing after a day of sightseeing. Many good restaurants within walking distance. The only downside is that you can hear people walk by your room on the tile surface and as they shut their doors. Also, they need to update their hairdryers.

The hotel itself is very quaint with a terrific courtyard, but the location felt a little shady to me (lots of graffitti) and I was glad to be behind a locked gate. I was not as thrilled as the rest of the reviewers about the staff. The people working in the breakfast room were pleasant, but I found the woman working at the front desk impatient and unhelpful. The room was a nice size and the breakfast was good, they also have a "manager's reception" type thing that I've never seen that before in Europe and was nice. We paid alot for our room, but if you can get a good price the snarky front staff lady could be overlooked. Also, cash payment gets you a 5% discount.

Fantastic location within walking distance of Collosseum, Vatican and all other main attractions. Wonderful small good value restaurants on doorstep set in small winding cobbled streets. We found a sat nav invaluable to get us back to the hotel and also take us to the main sights.

It was a really good room for three adults (often triple rooms are cramped). Staff couldn't be kinder. Being behind locked gates made us feel secure. Just lovely. Breakfast could be eaten outside and there is a nice little bar to while away some time. We liked being slightly out of the centre (1.5 miles from Vatican) as this means restaurants more reasonably priced and there are lots of them! We were very happy to walk to the sights. Taxi's are reasonable (8 euros to get to the Spanish Steps, saving us a half-hour walk).

We recommend our favorite hotel to all our friends who visit Rome and they love it as much as we do. We have stayed here countless times and we treated our newlywed son and new daughter-in-law to a nice stay in the early days of their honeymoon. Hotel Santa Maria is an oasis of tranquility in the heart of the Trastevere neighborhood in central Rome. The single storey rooms all open on a beautiful and quiet courtyard with ample furnishings for rest and relaxation after time in the hustle and bustle of central Rome, within short strolling distance of the Tiber, Piazza Navona, Campo di Fiori, the Forum and (of course) the shopping and restaurants of central Rome. Breakfast and the complimentary snacks in the early evening are delicious. Umbrellas and bikes available. Perfect!

The hotel was a little hard to find. Taxis are reluctant to navigate the streets directly to the hotel, but are willing to drop you off in the church piazza and its a short walk from there. But, once you're there, it is quite relaxing and the service was very nice. The rooms all have access to a courtyard and the orange trees were in blossom while we were there and the fragrance was wonderful.

The rooms are clean and well maintained. The wi-fi connection was good in the room and complimentary.

Restaurants are all over the place and several were very good. There is no street noise, but there is some noise from adjacent rooms and some guests forget that even though they're outside, their voices carry to the rooms. Also, get instructions on how to operate the air conditioning in the room.

The breakfast buffet was nice with a good selection of rolls, cereals and cold cuts. In the afternoon, they also set up a nice complimentary buffet and offer wine which helps get you through until the restaurants open for dinner.

Overall, the hotel offers a nice experience for a stay in Rome. It is certainly unique and everyone seemed happy to be staying there.

They arranged for a car to the airport and it was waiting on time at the hotel when we had requested. It was nice to have a guaranteed rate to the airport.
