I can't understand the negative comments about this hotel. Sure the area is a little marred by the large amount of graffiti on the walls but travelling around rome you quickly see that this particular social blight is everywhere so to use the local 'decoration' as a reason to complain against a hotel is a bit beyond the pale. Having booked the hotel for my honeymoon I think you can appreciate that i was looking for perfection, We elected to have the hotel arrange a driver to pick us up from the airport. Dressed in a suit, and driving a mercedes. more importantly it took the stress out of arriving in a country as we were delivered to the hotel in a timely fashion. The breakfasts were more than adequate, rolls, ham, cheese, cereal, croissants and other pastries, yoghurts fruit juices, scrambled egg and a choice of what coffee you wanted ( rather than a jug of stewing filter coffee) and it was lovely to sit out in the courtyard eating breakfast. the staff were all very polite, spoke excellent english, and were happy to suggest restaurants or tours which might be of interest. The rooms ( we had a double ) were all clean with aircon, tv, and phone as well as a nicely appointed ensuite bathroom. Despite trastavere being a busy area for nightlife it never interfered with our sleep as in the hotel santa maria you are always a little cloistered away from the outside world. The day we left we asked for a taxi to be arranged to take us to the station. The taxi was there, on time, and got us to the station with litle delay. It was little things like this which really made us appreciate this hotel. All in all, when we go back to rome we will be staying here. I cant recommend it enough.

My family and I stayed at this hotel for three nights. It was clean and comfortable, the staff very helpful. Breakfast was lovely, plenty of everything, ideal for big appetites! Very quiet, the only sound was nearby church bells, despite the nearness of a busy main road. Easy to walk to all the sights in the city from this hotel. Hotel organised a complimentary tour around the heart of Rome which was excellent. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and would definitely use it again

We chose this hotel on the basis of reviews on this site. It is in a wonderful position for all the sites and resturants. We did have a problem with the low ceilings and have a few bumps to prove it. The shower over the bath worked well but flooded the floor however careful we were. The breakfast was good, the coffee excellent and staff helpful so on balance we would recommend it.

We stayed at the Hotel Santa Maria for four days in february 2006 and were completely satisfied by each aspect of the stay. From the moment we were collected at the airport by the hotel-arranged car we felt that nothing could be too much trouble. this was especially important to us as we were accompanied by our most discerning 17 month old son... His, and our, every need was attended to and we never felt that we were intruding on someone else's space. the rooms were comfortable, although not huge, and the public spaces were very welcoming. The location of the hotel may be considered rather remote from the main attractions for some, but the ease of travel did not make this a problem and it was a positive bonus in the evening when we were able to walk less that 200 metres and have a choice of many welcoming and authentic eating places.

I would definitely go back to this hotel and recommend it to friends who are looking for a quiet hotel with lots of charm.

Just returned from this great little hotel tucked away in a narrow street in the characterful and bustling Trastavere district. Lots of restaurants and bars nearby, and within walking distance of all the main tourist sites. It is a cool oasis to return to for drinks in the garden courtyard in the early evening where complimentary snacks are provided. Our room was off the courtyard, clean and neat with a very nice bathroom. Staff are very helpful and will recommend/book restaurants, taxis etc. Internet access is provided free. Breakfast will set you up for the day. We loved it and will always stay here when in Rome. This is a quiet hotel - not for noisy late night drinkers though you can do that round the corner in the Piazza. Don't be put off by graffiti on the narrow streets of Trastavere - its just Rome.
